The production is beyond bad. I really would like to listen to this since I see a new approach for progressive here. Maybe they will bring out a remastered version in 20 years. Will have to wait until then.

I feel like an idiot and I have to change my rating now. The production quality problems I was experiencing were the Dolby Atmos settings in Apple Music which is my streaming provider.

As if disc 1 wasn t already a super solid display of Mastodon bangers, disc 2 is where it's at boys. They give you a spiritual connection to early Mastodon and specially Crack the Skye's sense of journeyand vibe. Although not as heavy, is certainly a mature, smoothed Mastodon which proves the band is aging well and aware. I asked for a new Mastodon full on prog and this is close enough. Exceded my expectations in every way, and specially based on the singles, that work much better in context. I want to say I love Gobblers of Dregs and Eyes of Serpents, but right before you have the heaviest here Savage Lands m/. Before those you have eerie almost power ballad Had it All and the bold experimental Peace and tranquility and esoteric Dagger. Disc 1 while not necessarily worse is certainly more direct and helps to kill the Don thirst. Big praise to the quantity, quality and rawness of the solos. This thing is drenched. Tk you Mastodon.

I dig a handful of the tracks here but it definitely could have used a trim. No reason for this thing to be as long as it is. I keep seeing comparisons to Crack the Skye but this is nowhere near as captivating throughout like CTS is. Hopefully some of it will grow on me like Emperor did.

As someone who has liked, but not loved Mastodon's past few albums, this rules. If you're looking for another Blood Mountain you won't find it here, but this is the best album they've put out since Crack the Skye. Also, not sure why people are complaining so vehemently about the production. It's not the best I've ever heard, but it's not offensive at all and it gets the job done. Only thing I noticed is that the drums don't sound quite as full and powerful as they usually do. 3.7/5

Unfortunately a set of very formulaic Prog-stodon songs with a handful of new ingredients thrown into the mix here and there to attempt "experimentation". Brent was the source of the truly weird stuff that made the band's songwriting stand out, so it's no real surprise that an album where his contributions are sidelined results in most of the songs sounding the same. Cold Dark Place takes this album's sound and adds much more interesting layers to it, which makes sense that it's the most Brent-centric release in over a decade. Also it irritates me how just about every song here has a bizarre, unique title, but the lyrics are the most boring, basic shit ever. I wanted to like this but it's easily my least favorite Mastodon album and outside the fun closing song, nothing here stood out in the slightest.

I'm really enjoying Hushed and Grim so far, it's quite a surprising shift away from the catchier stuff on the last few albums. There's a lot to digest so it'll take a bit longer to formulate my overall thoughts. Also the production is being completely overblown here, it isn't their best sounding album but it absolutely isn't on the same level as Gold & Grey.

I don't count myself as a Mastodon fan. I like random songs, and appreciate albums when they're on, but I never go to them on my own. This release will be different. This is easily the best thing they've done. It's heavy, progressive, and catchy without really losing what they've kind of always been about. I don't really hear an issue with the production on the actual album version, but the Dolby Apple Music version is definitely a little off.

There are some cool things happening but never for a full song. I've just heard all this
done before better by the same band -- riffs are like "oh yeah, that sounds like Circle of
Cysquatch, except less interesting" or "I've heard this solo in Ember City, but it fit
better". Seems like a newcomer might enjoy this plenty, though. Which, in 2021, is probably
the point.

Hushed And Grim is without a doubt the best Mastodon album of their entire career. All that there
is to love about Mastodon is here. The brooding heaviness, the genius riffs which threaten
madness, and the progressive songwriting that staggers the senses. 'Hushed and Grim' is born

A staggering accomplishment for a band that has literally done no wrong in 20 years. I can't overstate this enough: Mastodon is THE Rosetta Stone band for me. They are my primary lens through which all wavelengths of light are passed through, coming out the other end warped and jaded for biased observation. Hushed and Grim brings the band into more serious territory without sacrificing one iota of their staple proggish rumble. Every era of their evolution rears up and flexes throughout it's 15 tracks. It's big and bold and sad and trippy as fuck. This cup is overflowing. Brann's vocal ascension is at it's absolute apex here. The three track run to close this album is among the greatest triple c-c-c-comboooo breaker they've strung together since Crack the Skye, their much acclaimed and widely accepted masterpiece. I might as well buy a backup vinyl copy right now cause this thing is about to get worn into dust.
