The Dark Saga has been one of my favourite albums in the band's catalogue, despite its mediocre production and sound. Its an accomplished release with strong compositions and tight performances from all band members. A concept album based on the comic book character Spawn and although the idea might sound simplistic, John Schaffer manages to pen ten solid tracks with dark and emotional lyrics, ferocious riffs and powerfull vocals. Barlow's deep and heavenly screams showcase his remarkable vocal range and make him the point of reference. In general, the songs in The Dark Saga are not as complex as in previous releases and the duration of songs is below four minutes (with the exception of "Question of Heaven") however, this makes the release even more accessible. Recommendations: "I Died For You", "Dark Saga", "The Hunter", "A Question of Heaven", "Slave to the Dark".

There are a number of ways one can listen to this album. If we compare it to Burnt Offerings, it's a polished yet streamlined and borders on being dumbed down. As a stake in Iced Earth's overarching formula, it's a definitive offering that shows the band at their most comfortable, namely with regards to Barlow and the punctual production. As a concept album, it doesn't fully realize its vision in feeling like one. And finally, as an album simply enjoyed for the sheer sake of enjoyment, it more than holds up and is easy to turn to. All things considered, it's an honestly fun ride that almost leaves you hungry for more, both in regards to the quantity and quality of material. Dark Saga ultimately exists as a good entry in Iced Earth's catalog, but also remains overshadowed by any of the band's better offerings (of which there are quite a few).

Iced Earth's Spawn concept album The Dark Saga is a truly strong and consistent effort through and through. It mainly sees Iced Earth reigning in their sound a little bit after the overly epic Burnt Offerings. For example the longest song is the 7 minute master piece A Question of Heaven. All in all Iced Earth excel at making memorable complete sounding shorter songs. Also the dynamics on this album are really well done as well, and at times Iced Earth opt for a softer sound over thrashing riffs and pounding drums. Overall Spawn gets an excellent concept treatment on The Dark Saga. Best Songs: I Died For You, The Hunter, and A Question of Heaven.
