The last two tracks on this album might be the best thing I've heard in years. Didn't expect much from this album and their debut was still my favourite. Blown away by this.

Although in a lot of ways this is a step forward for what the band has created the last few years, this fifth album from the Midwest emo band is a lot of things, without hitting in anything. It definitely has a lot of those ?Thrice-ism? that one would expect from an alternative and art rock album dabbling in the likes of post-rock and progressive rock. It is also not helped by the behemoth tracks at the end of the record that are some of the worst songs they have ever written. The pacing is off for those tracks and really for most of the album.

byebye midwest, hello prog! Indeed, if the post'n'indie rock traces of their sound have not disappeared, their emo side has decreased over the years while the prog linings have become more prominent. This approach culminates in Illusory Walls, which sees the atmosphere retain its central place within the band's soundscape more epic than ever. Some tracks overstay their welcome, and the middle is not on par with the bookends, but damn, this is still constantly beautiful, well-composed, and produced.

this is ok, a bit generic at times and the last two tracks could use some heavy editing. vocalist needs work. i've heard worse though. kind of gives me trail of dead vibes, especially the singer.
