The Used's new album is one that defines the word grower. At first it might seem that the album is just a couple of great song and the rest merely ok-solid filler. Those great songs are the ones that sound the closer to The Used of old, however once you get pass that first impression one realizes that the rest of the songs are very good on their own and that different doesn't have to mean bad. Artwork sees the band continuing in the more melodic direction established in Lies for The Liars while exchanging Bert's mindless screaming for more melody and smoother song structures. While many, like me, will miss Bert's screams, the album works just fine without them and adding them for the sake of having them would disrupt the flow of the songs and come out feeling forced. Overall, it feels like The Used made the album they wanted to make. It's safe to say that the days of their self-titled are over, however Artwork demonstrates that the band doesn't need to make another self-titled to play great music and once that sinks in you'll find yourself enjoying this album more than you thought you would at first listen. My recommendation when approaching this album is to listen to it twice.

While the band everyone and your mom were expecting to deliver another amazing record, the band everyone and your dog was expecting to fail turned out to release their best record yet.
It isn't a record that the older The Used's fans and haters will fall in love instantly, but it's a grower. The most consistent release of them so far and definitely a record worthy checking out.

Artwork can be seen as a rightfully unpleasant, gross take on this band's musical style overall; to fully seal in just how grim and heavy the record can be at times, hear the fantastic "The Best of Me" and "Men Are All the Same" for proof. The Used to me have always been a group for everyone, yet simultaneously aren't for anybody living peacefully with their intellectual glasses and pouted lips per se. The band's melodies are ever so compelling, but Bert McCracken has a voice that - while vigorous - somewhat crosses the more obnoxious areas. Well, the point I'm trying to make here is that I commend the direction that was taken for this release.

This album was a grower for me for sure. And I'm really glad I stuck with it because it's my favourite album by The Used now. I find it's their most emotional, varied album to date. One of my favourite things about this album is the drumming. Some songs start off slowly only to suddenly -and perfectly- change tempo seemingly of their own accord, and vice-versa for the fast-starting to slow-ending songs. It really gives this album a unique structure.

To see how The Used has progressed since their formation is outstanding, shifting their sounds and varieties over time to experiment with genres. Artwork is dark and mature, but keeps a sense of entertainment without divulging the listener too deep into the emotional level. Whether it's the faster 'Blood on My Hands', the catchy 'Empty With You' or the emotionally feathering 'Kissing You Goodbye', The Used blends their sounds and techniques together for a varied album. One of the best works by this group, maturing more and more with every release they put out, this is by far the best of them all.

Id have to say the Used decided to ditch the pop-punk feel of In Love And Death and the mainstream of Lies for the Liars for a more post-hardcore feel in Artwork. They did this flawlessly and were able to mix in some screams with emotional vocals. Their were parts that were contreversial for a Used song such as the beggining of "On The Cross" when he states "We'll kill the lesbians, we'll kill the faggots, i said god dammit we'll kill them all." and were a little uncalled for and out of place, but it didnt really make a difference to the music. Overall this just was a kickass album and ranks second, right after In Love And Death.

with three albums under their belt, the used have created their masterpiece with "artwork". this album has a much more mature sound than anything they have created before and the end result is something uniquely impressive. screamo, emo, alternative, pop, whatever you want to call the used, they undeniably are a talented band and they really flex their muscles on "artwork". soooooo good.

Half this album can be listened to repeatedly, and some of tracks are definitely in my top 15 of the best songs they have written. Come Undone is the first to come to mind.

It seems The Used have lost their edge on this album. They went for a more accessible sound this time around and it just bores me. I liked some of Bert's melodies but all the songs have the same structure and they become very predictable.

This is generally a bias rating but i don't hate the used; thier first album was amazing, i just feel more and more negative about them with every release as i feel like as the years go by they seem to be getting worse and worse, with nothing getting anywhere near the quality of their debut. However if i were to look at the releases objectively, like i generally do, they wouldn't be half as bad, possibly a 2 at the worst, yet i find myself unable to do so and as a result my objectivity rating is lower than it would be. REMEMBER: this is just my warped opinion and it is something you should ignore.

So, The Used back with another album, many a fan would have wondered what direction they will take with their sound. With every album The Used have slightly changed their songwriting and overall sound. With their breakthrough self-titled debut album they brought something new and raw to the music world. Many people fell in love with The Used and thought: "This is some good *** right here". Then when their second album came out there were a lot of disappointment amongst their fans. And the third album followed pretty much in the same vein. rThen came their fourth and best album, 'Artwork'. If you compare this with the other three releases it sounds a bit like all of them, but not completely. While 'Artwork' doesn't really impress on the first spin, after a couple of listens you will like it. 'Blood on my hands' is the hardest song on the album but isn't really one of the standout tracks. Songs like 'Born to quit' and 'kissing you goodbye' will be remembered as some of the best pieces of music that The Used have created.rIf your an old fan, give it a try. People that is new to this band will also like it. This four guys are growing as musicians and it's quite evident on this release.
