4.4 superb | Rowan5215 STAFF | August 12th 21 | if you told me even a week ago that Brandon fuckin Flowers would write one of the most lyrically engaging and thematically coherent albums of the year... I'd have dumped my milkshake over your head while yelling "are we human or are we dancer". but here we are folks, this is life in 2021

4.5 superb | gryndstone | August 13th 21 | Lyrically and thematically, this does indeed stand a tall head and shoulders above every other Killers project. Small town life - the rubber tire factory, the train tracks, hillbilly heroin...Re-occuring topics weave their way throughout the album like a tapestry. Musically it's nothing incredible, but it is a different and welcome sound, filled with subtle melodies and quieter tones. Leans heavy into the americana, country-folk sound with a bit of the Brandon Flowers bombast. Most certainly contender for the best Killers album. 4.4/5 NOTE: don't listen to the abridged version of this on spotify, if you do you're missing the entire point of the album

5.0 classic | letsgofishing | August 14th 21 | Guys, in 2015, there was a terrible accident with the Cern Hadron Collider which had
everyone on Earth unknowingly hurtle into an entirely different but parallel dimension. So,
what I'm saying is, don't lose your shit, there is a rational explanation.

4.0 excellent | iGuter | August 13th 21 | rI LOVE The Killers and I am even surprised how incredibly consistent and thematically strong this album is compared to their last few records. (EDIT: Sorry Rowan5215, I saw you wrote basically the same sentence before me.) Imploding the Mirage was a great record, (honestly most of their albums are great) but this album might be the best of their career. Listen, to the Pressure Machine first for the thematic journey, and, if you want to enjoy the songs as they are, listen to the ABRIDGED version

5.0 classic | GoldenGuy444 | July 26th 21 | Fuck me. A bold uncompromising look at rural and cultural rot. Romanticizing the darkness of living in a town wrapped in decay. Families not understanding what is happening in their homes until it is too obvious to ignore. The darkness of the chilling and blunt "Desperate Things" the gorgeous "Quiet Town" with its harmonica / piano solo and the title track with the jaw dropping fiddle. Just a really fucking good album. Better than ITM? Honestly, yes.
Edit: 8-9-23. About 2 years on from this album's release and I think it gets better over time even. 'Quiet Town', one of the album's center pieces, is one of the most ingenious tracks Brandon and co has ever penned. The effortless lyrics divulging blind acceptance of tragedy under the guise of something greater while the upbeat melodies keep the facade in place. You almost forget just how dim it is, and that is the point. The usage of interviews too adds so much depth to every stop on the journey. This is one of those albums where you feel every emotion.

4.0 excellent | Fathm | August 13th 21 | I tend to rate albums more by the quality of the artist's other work instead of just by everything (though of course that does play a factor). The Killers have always been one of my favourite bands, but I've never exactly come to them for meaningful lyrics and anything but pure fun bombast.rThat is to say: Hoooooooly fuck

4.5 superb | Lucman | August 13th 21 | Once I heard "Quite Town" I knew this was going to be something special. I have never been more floored by a Killers song than that one yet the way this record unfolds eclipses even that. This is their opus.

3.5 great | charlopiano | October 1st 21 | I guess the Killers understood what to do with their music. They'd been pumping out the same record since Battle Born and people we're not there for it at all, but they've figured it out, just do something different, so they did, and so it works.

4.0 excellent | ajcollins15 | August 19th 21 | In a lot of ways, this is the album that Brandon Flowers has always wanted to make and now that he finally has done it, for the most part, it pays off. The new Killers album is an interesting concept album that blatantly looks at the flaws within small towns in rural America. For someone who currently lives in one of those small towns because of my Ph.D. work, I kind of took this a lot differently than I think I normally would when I lived in the city. This album was a reminder that these people love to believe they are ?simple and quiet towns, where nothing bad happens?, but when you strip that back you see the heartache of loneliness, lost dreams, and forgotten passions. This is all backed by some powerful heartland rock and contemporary folk music. There is also some very interesting fake ?interview? snippets of fictional townspeople of the fictional town ?Zion?. Reminds me a lot of the ?Eraserhead? soundtrack with its haunting drone and ambiance. My only complaint is that ?Terrible Thing? is one of the driest contemporary folk tracks I have heard in a while and the Phoebe Bridgers feature leaves a lot to be desired.

4.5 superb | mvdu | August 13th 21 | Tunefulness lessens their trademark bombast, but they haven?t gotten boring. It results in one of the best albums rthey have done. On first listen, the only weakness is a few songs seemed a bit long. Could grow on me even rmore.
