3.5 great | Ebola | October 29th 21 | See, this is the kind of tech death I can get behind. If you're gonna be masturbatory, go all the fuck out. Throw in swing
breakdowns and slap bass solos. Some flamenco sections, too. Sure. Fuck it

3.0 good | BenCee | October 29th 21 | Decently written and there is some AMAZING stuff here, but funnily enough one factor drags this down into the mud: way too many squealing pinch harmonics. It sounds like one thousand dogs are chewing on one thousand squeaky toys. Would have easily been a 4-4.5 if they had cut out 90% of them. In 'El is definitely the best track.

2.0 poor | Steiner | November 19th 21 | Not for me. Sounds like chaos abbreviated by flamenco dancers. Really wanted to like this for my friends that recommended it too. There's absolutely no questioning the talent and originality of the musicians (these guys are bringing Baroque style counterpoint to fucking metal) but the take-away for me on this one is just because you can doesn't mean you should.

4.0 excellent | IAMLEGION | November 6th 21 | I am really digging this album. I?m not a big fan of unrelenting technical prowess being constantly on display, but some of these songs are so damn catchy. The only thing stopping this from being a classic in my eyes are the vocals. The low growls get boring after a while, which is why I love the ending of In?Ell so much when he introduces some much needed high screams.

3.0 good | Tundra | November 3rd 21 | listening to this is the equivalent of giving a dog a chew toy of the squeak variety for 1 hr and 11 mins lolrbut no... this album is definitely a bit much and definitely overstays its welcome by A LOT. At least Archspire know to keep it short and potent, something that these guys completely missed rthe memo on

not that it is not good.

4.0 excellent | WattPheasant | March 28th 22 | I'm very close to giving this album a 4.5. The problem is when an album is just one really long guitar solo, it starts to lack diversity and balance. I need more melody. When comparing this album to bands like Eternity's End, Obscura, or hell, even Archspire, this is very lacking in musical breaks and interludes to let you unpack the onslaught of wankery.rIt additionally needs hooks and well-written solos to complement the sheer speed and technicality of the performances. To elaborate, A well-written solo is not identical to a technical solo, even though more technical solos are more difficult to write generally. Obscura is able to pack in a ton of melody and earworms into their incredibly technical composition in a way that First Fragment are just not as experienced at yet making this a somewhat tiring listen to get through in one sitting.
