this is absolutely the most spacious and atmospheric wolves in the throne room have ever been. it's true that i miss the raw intensity of their first three records, but having the massive soundscapes more gracefully intertwined with the black metal makes this a wittr album many have been waiting for - absolutely no contrast between the visceral heavy black metal and the ambient soundscapes. they have truly become one on this album, and the result is the maturation of wittr's sound we've arguably been waiting a decade for.

Best Wolves In The Throne Room release, without a doubt. They managed to mix their earlier sound and their more modern sound, which resulted in a synergy. This turned out to a bit folkish, bit heavier (the similarities to the punchiest Scandinavian riffs are very obvious), yet a very modern-sounding release (hats off for the great production). However, sometimes it felt they could have cut some of these songs shorter and add one or two other songs, because in my opinion there were some clear filler parts in songs like "Through Eternal Fields" and "Underworld Aurora", for example. And as the most positive thing: the song "Masters of Rain and Storm" near perfection! Probably their very best song too? Also, I'm happy they closed the album with an enchanting ambient piece. I'm satisfied.

Definitely their best since their early Cascadian years whilst keeping some of their more recent DNA, though I feel some are going a bit overboard with the praise here. The bits inbetween bm still kick ass, and finally the bm no longer feels lukewarm. Some of it even evokes the frozen goodness of Drudkh (3, 4 from its midtrack on), or the Oregon folkiness of Agalloch (e.g. 5 after its excellent atmospheric midtrack). That's not to say that it's all perfect. I really like how 1 introes the album, and the midtrack break and synthy ambient outro to 2 are cool too. 4 starts off on a really cool rupture, but quite a short one, and evolves into mokay bm before freezing up as said before. 6 starts off on fat nice bm, but around min 4-5 it gets quite awkward. I like the nice finish on a soft ambient track with 7, though it has a bit of an underwhelming feeling too. The bonus track is alright, more ambientey stuff, nice but nothing to get too excited about. This is a good album and their best in a long time, but I wasn't completely thrilled at all times either. 3.8

the guitars sound like old wittr but they're lower in the mix and have no emphasis on the rhythm now, it's all about atmospherics, which does not make for a very compelling atmo-black album of the wittr sort.

I was avoiding it for a few months. I feared of another immense disappointment (and also had a shit-tone of other stuff to listen to). Yesterday I finally turned it on. How lucky I was to do so. Wonderful album. Atmospheric black metal at it's finest. Perfectly balanced between black metal guitars, atmospheric passages and melancholic melodies. Loving every second of it.

I like Wolves in the Throne Room, but I don't know if I would have considered myself a fan before now. Their older stuff always felt a little too long, a little too sparse, and a little too repetitive. This album doesn't have any of those issues. This is epic, atmospheric, black metal done right.

Oh yeah BRING BACK THE CASCADES BABYYYYYY. Their best record since Two Hunters, Primordial Arcana fuses the more natural aspect of their soundscape (these first two minutes of "Underworld Aurora" goddamn) with well-integrated synths elevating the whole lot to Lustre levels of whimsical - bet nobody listened to Lustre but idc. Now let's send this babe to BNM. Edit: woah it already is BNM-certified, whaddaday. EditPiaf: damn it's better with each listen.
