Sounds to me like another Radiohead album essentially, most similar to HTTT than any others with a little AMSP and Thom Yorke's Anima thrown in there. The slower songs in the middle of the track list are the highlights.

My enjoyment of this album is somewhat inconsistent. At times it sounds amazing, and at other
times I don't care much about the songwriting, although I always have to agree that the
musicianship and technical ability on here is incredible.

Woah this Thom Yorke-led project wasn't hyped as much as last year's Kid Amnesiac repressing. Accompanied with bestie Greenwood and Sons of Kemet's drummer Tom Skinner, The Smile goes everywhere - post-punky rager, introspective "art" muzak, mathy passages, and jazz-rock tunes - without tying its propositions together. Especially, the space given to Skinner is quite narrow, most of the compositions being either led by Yorke's songwriting or Greenwood's arrangements. 2.9

I feel very indifferent towards this debut album from Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood with additions of Sons of Kemet's drummer Tom Skinner. On the one hand, it feels very at home with any fan of Radiohead will like and enjoy, but that idea also plagues this album because it very much feels like ideas that you can hear already on Ok Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, and A Moon Shaped Pool. Most of the record just feels like a mess of ideas that were thrown together just because they could. Still, there are some decent ideas here and there that leave me wishing they could have expanded on them more, but overall I have a hard time coming back to this one.

String and brass arrangement sounds a bit like the poppy fusion jazz thing going on with David Sylvian in the mid-80s, Jonny's playing more guitar, which is always good, the "angry" lyrics are cringe. Wish it could've been more uptempo.
