| 0.0 | Jom | March 27th 11 | "You would not believe your eyes when I whip out my monster prize" would make the opening lyrics to "Fireflies" the best first date song ever, but it's one syllable too many. Dammit. Back to the drawing board...

| 0.0 | MichaelJordan | May 2nd 10 | A lot of people really despise this record for ripping off the Postal Service. And rightly so. However, my reason for giving them such a low rating on this account is slightly different. You see, I thought that the Postal Service already sucked from the start. Owl City deserves to get a 1 not because it's just nauseatingly cutesy, contrived, and a carbon copy of the Postal Service; rather, they deserve a 1 for even wanting to rip off the Postal Service to begin with. Ugh. Fucking pansies.

| 1.0 awful | StrizzMatik | December 23rd 09 | Owl City just might be the most manufactured batch of fake sentimental pop drivel I've ever listened to and also doubles as sonic proof that the music industry is, indeed, doing it for the lulz. It's either that or clear signs of the coming Apocalypse. Owl City's architect/creator/fucktard Adam Young whines and cries his way through an album full of Postal Service covers OWAIT he "wrote" this shit? If you love tepid, sappy keyboards, lyrics so bad it literally gives you pain inside, autotuned crackers, and music so inoffensive it makes Colbie Caillat look like Converge, then Ocean Eyes is THE album for you.

| 3.5 great | AlexTM510 | August 10th 09 | Owl City is still doing his super sugar sweet electronic pop that at times can feel a bit homogeneous. However Ocean Eyes is step up from Maybe I'm Dreaming with it's bigger/deeper sounds, and more use of sonic landscapes. There is also a more cohesive flow so album doesn't completely tire one out on the first listen. Adam Young might be stuck in la-la land with his project but he continues to show hes the real deal with his melodic depth and sonic soundscapes that could evolve to something much more captivating. Don't believe me? Listen to Fireflies and tell me that it didn't make you smile. PS the album overall rating is low cause it's not br00tal or hipster or depressing for Sputnikmusic to enjoy.

| 2.0 poor | qwer7yfreak | December 6th 09 | There's one song I kind of like from this album (Fireflies). A couple songs I can tolerate (Hello Seattle, Cave In). However, everything else I completely dislike. It's so full of pandering, over-sentimental bullshit that it becomes painful to listen to. The entire album just falls apart into a big, sickeningly sugary mess. However, in small doses, Owl City isn't bad. It's certainly not as good as the group it's always compared to, Postal Service, but it's better than some mainstream music.

| 3.5 great | Supertails | August 11th 12 | While 'Fireflies' has caused a lot of an it's-cool-to-hate-him towards Owl City's Adam Young, nobody bothers to listen to the rest of the album and realize how little he sounds like The Postal Service.rThat said, Ocean Eyes is far from a perfect album. It can't seem to find a sound it wants to use, and certain songs (such as 'Dental Care' or 'The Bird and the Worm') will only be loved by serious fans and a few others.rThe album's strength is in its production and in Young's unwavering heart in his music. It's clear this isn't manufactured pop (there's a reason 'Fireflies' was his only big hit) and the abstract lyricism will cause both massive fans and serious detractors.rAll-in-all, Ocean Eyes is a bit of a hit-or-miss album for most, but for me personally it was great. A step down from 2008's "Maybe I'm Dreaming", but still great.

| 3.0 good | soldier0cross | January 11th 10 | Its tough to place Owl City, its heavily produced and unoriginal pop rock. Adam Young writes lyrics that mean close to absolutely nothing. I cringed heavily when I listened to Dental Care, full of just the cheesiest and lamest jokes Ive ever heard.
That all being said, the album has alot of catchy and fun to listen to songs. Yea its just the stuff your gonna be hearing on the radio, and its not groundbreaking, genre busting, or even musically interesting. Its fairly shallow electronic pop music. But its infectious and fun to listen to. Songs like Fireflies and Hello Seattle have little to no meaning to them...but does music always have to have a lyrical meaning behind it? Why cant we be content with listening to a little bit of meaningless pretty lyrics affronted by a catchy synthesized beat? Does every single artist need to have the lyrical artistry of Bob Dylan or the technical prowess of Dream Theatre? Hardly, if its fun its fun.
No Owl City, isnt making anything new, and yea its just music that your hearing on the radio all the time. But that being said, there are gems on this album that are a true joy to listen and relax to. And for that I think Adam Young succeeds in creating an easily accessible album that many people listen to. And thankfully for once...these chart topping tunes arent all about sex, drugs and being a slut. So after listening to Ocean Eyes many times, I can still find enjoyment in its catchy and cute songs...save for dental care. But what are you gonna do?

| 3.0 good | ghostalgeist | May 8th 23 | 3 / 5. The nerfed Postal Service indeed. Kinda surprised that I wound up liking this
slightly *less* than Adam's debut. The standouts - Fireflies, Vanilla Twilight, and
especially Cave In - are easily as strong as, if not stronger than, the highlights from
Maybe I'm Dreaming, but there's a considerable amount of filler present here that makes the
album a slog to get through. I mean... a song about going to the dentist??? Are you fuckin
serious?

| 2.0 poor | musicandoreo | August 10th 17 | As someone who normally enjoys bubblegum electropop if Carly rae Jepsen`s Emotion and chali
xcx`s Sucker were like enjoying a delectable bag of hard candy, this album is like being spoon fed
pure sugar for 40 minutes its just TOO sweet.
Young's constant wide eyed whimsical delivery gives him about as much emotional weight as a
character in a bad M Night Shyamalan film
best song: fireflies
worst song : the bird and the worm
( most are kind of equally mediocre and run together though)
unintentionally hilarious song: Dental Care

| 1.0 awful | Jared Floryan | December 9th 14 | Throwing mainly elements of indie pop and electronica in a furnace akin to a paraplegic tiger giving head to a deaf horseman, Ocean Eyes pretty much can be perceived as contrived and just plain emotionless, among any other fourth-rate adjective I could give to describe this unholy mess of a studio album. Adam Young could've easily made a collection of "Fireflies" remixes, with those being more noticeable than the rest of the weak, spineless tracks that he had to offer here.
Bump |
| 0.0 | macadoolahicky | January 18th 12 | "Cave In" is a really good song, "Tip of the Iceberg" is a nice listen, and I would love to see "Umbrella Beach" appear on a Dance Dance Revolution game (yes, I play those games, and I am quite boss at them... pretty lame of me, but it's a good work out!), but everything else on Ocean Eyes really isn't worth it. The lyrics are largely beyond silly, one of the worst offenders being the lead single "Fireflies." What's worse is that the album includes three less captivating versions of songs Adam Young had previously released. What's even worse is that two of Young's catchiest songs ("Strawberry Avalanche" and "Hot Air Balloon") were released as digital singles before the album came out and weren't even included on the album! That just pisses me off.

Let's hope he stops before this makes any other kids favor surface over substance in music.

| 2.0 poor | WashboardSuds | December 16th 10 | Quite a step back for Young. He sees himself in his ocean-loving state of euphoria sprinkled with vanilla and sea salt. He's really just taking his refined Maybe I'm Dreaming sound and selling himself out a bit. While it isn't awful (see "Umbrella Beach", "Cave In", "Tidal Wave"), its still a largely goofy electronic album appealing to the sugary-sweet-at-heart and little else.

I still like this album, even if it isn't the best. I would personally give it a 3.

| 2.5 average | samkos | July 20th 10 | Owl City (or Adam Young) 's latest full length album Ocean Eyes is to hidden behind the fluffy, over articulate, and strange lyrics for anyone to notice how talented Adam Young really is. To arange music in the way he does is takes a hell of a lot of talent.
But seriously. The lyrics take an above average arrangement and album and turn it into a average, if not slightly below average album. Sometimes its so sweet it hurts.
Don't get me wrong, the album has its moments, like Hello Seattle or Vannila Twilight, but seriously, only this guy could write a 3 minute song about..going to the dentist..like really? How in gods name did he pull that off?
The album has songs you can listen to several times and think wow..this is pretty good. But then theres the other ugly side. The side where you think your going to puke cause Adam Young is trying to feed you to much cotton candy the worlds amazing words.
Owl City just seems more than slightly to sweet for most, kind of like putting sugar on well...more sugar..and due to that has never received any major awards.
The verdict: You wont be able to listen to the whole album at once so be careful. Maybe just download the ones you like, the whole album could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Bump |
| 3.5 great | rubberbend | March 30th 10 | For his junior album, Owl City sure tries. A little juvenile, a little spastic, a little unvaried. He's my favorite musician, but dang, he can do better lyrics and better harmonies. Melody-wise, he's great, but a little too sweet for the masses.

| 2.0 poor | Asiatic667 | February 16th 10 | This is basically an entire album of one song. That one song is catchy, and sometimes even enjoyable. But all in all, it's not enough to disguise the fact that this is the "fireflies" album, and when Adam Young packs it in a week from now, that song will probably be what he is best known for
Bump |
| 1.0 awful | Rut8norm | February 8th 10 | Why would anyone want to put themselves through listening to Owl City? This album consists of some of the only music that i literally cringe in disgust at. it's seriously some of the worst music available to humans. name anything, i'd rather listen to it. for the love of humanity don't listen to this album. Go listen to The Postal Service. same concept except it's actual music with value and passion.
Bump |
| 1.0 awful | JoRos | January 28th 10 | I don't why this guy is so popular. It's not catchy and isn't anywhere close to being unique since it is a failed attept at copying the Postal Service. "Fireflies", the "hit" off the album, basically sounds the same as the beginning of "Such Great Hieghts" (which is one of my favorite songs) by the Postal Service. Owl City a.k.a. Adam Young should just stay in his room with his little toy robots which freak out in the "Fireflies" video when they hear the song cause they can't take it anymore.

| 0.0 | MrDoobie | December 4th 09 | I believe this reviewer is too harsh and critical, but I have to agree it is a bad album. One first listen, it's just cute and airy and bearable, but after a couple spins you just begin to grit your teeth and pray for it to be over. I can see why some may like it, though.
Bump |
| 0.0 | Matt French CONTRIBUTOR | December 3rd 09 | Simply put: a collection of enjoyable and somewhat average songs. 'Fireflies' is a good representation of what Owl City are really about- poppy, up-beat electronic music. While the album has a few gems such as this track, it suffers greatly from its length and predictability. Fans of Ben Gibbard's vocals are sure to swoon over this, but honestly, you might as well just play 'Fireflies' seventeen times after it's finished.
