Rules hard. Yes, a step down from Guardians for sure from a musical perspective, but still quite damn prog. The closer sounds blocky at times which ruins it, but improves towards the end. Alder is an improvement for sure on vocals, though I must admit I would still prefer a lower pitch, and the peoduction is finally good!

Easily one of the best Progressive albums I've ever heard. Upon hearing the first 5 tracks I would have given this album a 3, but after hearing the Ivory Gates of Dreams, the whole album began to come together, and so I deem this a 4.

Fates Warning is a legendary band that pioneered progressive metal along with Queensrhyche and Dream Theater. This album is close to a classic, but it's a little weaker than Awaken The Guardian overall. The new vocalist, Ray Alder is a similar vocalist to John Arch. However, he lacks the power and energy John had put into his voice; Alder does seem to have more low-end range and versatility. The album is not produced as well as Awaken the Guardian either; the overall production is of lower quality, it's even softer volume-wise. Shades of Heavenly Death is also not as good as the other songs, but it is the heaviest. Recommended tracks are the epic Ivory Gate of Dreams, the fast-paced, catchy Anarchy Divine, and the slower In a Word.
