A bad attempt at trying to modernize King Crimson.
Both singers voices managed to get worse on here than Schlagenheim.
Hogwash and Balderdash, despite the terrible name, is the best thing on here, though Slow
is also decent.

Black Midi is not for the faint heart ? not in that it is some kind of extreme metal, but in the fact that the four-piece, London-based band might have completely rejuvenated the sound of rock music entirely; 20 years after the last greats died out in the early 2000s. Although this sound and style are not utterly new, especially to those who love the sound of avant-garde type music, what makes this album perfect is the ideal amount of blending the band does with such unique styles of music. I honestly will leave this short review at this: Cavalcade is both a futuristic take on rock music while also being a celebration of what made the greatest rock bands of the last 50 years truly breathtaking. The influences run deep, but this album sits out on its own as it blends much of what made those bands so special into a compact 42-minute listen. Black Midi carries the torch laid down by The Mars Volta 15 years earlier and continues down the experimental path with no hiccups.

Holy fuck, this record is incrdibly unpredictable and that's amazing. Filled with amazing riffs, and vocal delivery, this is a must listen from this year.

I haven't heard 70s revivalist prog like this for some time. I enjoy the parallels to King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, but I also just enjoy the vocals across the board. Black Midi's singing can be hit-or-miss, but I certainly enjoy it. Not a perfect album though, Dethroned/Diamond Stuff can use some more depth.

Ascending Forth is godly near the end. Nuff said, but honestly I do not understand the flack black midi gets, I do hope people come round to them because I am becoming black midified

A transitionary stage with some absolutely dire production, Cavalcade is entertaining and vital enough, but lacks precisely what made Schlagenheim so phenomenal (its production, its aggression, and the variety of its songwriting). John L, Dethroned, and Slow are wonderful standouts, but the album, while rollicking, doesn't hold up to scrutiny. I can see Hellfire absolutely demolishing this if it takes Schlagenheim's aggression, tightens the songwriting, and improves production.

Black Midi, while still avoiding making a MIDI-only album smh, pushes further away from their art-punk first album with even noisier, even more ambitious hodgepodge of rock and prog and swiveling riffs. It's a purposeful mess, ever-progressing and turning its own aesthetic inside out.
