| 5.0 classic | TheJunkhead | April 10th 21 | A great rapper with a soulful singing voice and creative beats that use ACOUSTIC drums and groovy bass lines! I rdon?t even know if I could describe this as a rap album. So many different elements to it. Even some electric rguitar in there. The closest I could describe this album is a new D?Angelo that can rap. Only had a few listens, but rmight even bump it up to a 5 eventually. Different than just about any artist out there.

| 4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | March 18th 21 | There are not many debut albums that come out and hit this hard while also being incredibly original and unique. The Australian based, Ghana born, artists comes through with a massive ? somewhat concept album ? on depression and how racial inequality can lead to it. With these powerful lyrics that Genesis creates dense songs based on neo-soul and experimental hip-hop. However much of this album also has a huge amount of post-punk and synth punk esthetics of the likes of Talking Heads. There is even a heavy amount of new wave and no wave coming through on this project that it is hard to pinpoint. Also, he can sing, and rap is so many versatile ways that it?s insane to hear. Honestly, the only downfall is the last two tracks (not including the amazing closer) are two massive outliers on the whole record stylistically and conceptually. If he didn?t take that rather odd detour he would have created a top-notch, flawless debut album.

| 4.5 superb | XSebbyMcMuffinX | October 12th 22 | This album is absolutely incredible to me. There's such a wide mix of influences that come together flawlessly to carry through these vocal performances of a soul on fire, with impeccably well-crafted lyrics. The theme of the black dog carries a lot of weight as he really delves into the fine details of these two aspects: Of loving yourself when your partner convinces you otherwise, and when society convinces you otherwise as well. They aren't unrelated, it all contributes to an interplay of aspects of self-image. More importantly, the psychological nuances of what eats away at well-being, and the true nature of those nuances, is buried in all these lines in a very personally connective way; This album was born from the necessity of the human spirit to thrive. There's plenty of dreaminess throughout, a lot of throwbacks to older funk and soul styles, occasionally some rock and punk influences; it seamlessly bridges influences over multiple decades. Really feel the need to re-emphasize just how well-knit the lyrical themes between tracks are, it really serves as a strong basis for a complete listening experience as the performances fully convey the meanings. Most tracks are my favorites, but for a start, I recommend: Centrefold, Don't Need You, Smiling With No Teeth, Black Dogs!, Whip Cracker. These tracks all offer drastically different things while all being very clearly cohesive. Love it when experimentation lands well like this.

| 4.5 superb | TheGreatEscaper | December 21st 21 | Beyond being inventive and superbly crafted, this album is just so much damn fun to listen to? There's been a lot of albums this year that I appreciated a lot from an 'intellectual' or musical perspective, but few things come to mind as being so easy to listen to as this. Owusu's optimism runs through the whole album, and it's infectious.

| 3.5 great | charlopiano | May 24th 21 | How do you categorize this album? No, seriously, it's so inventive, it's hard to feel a certain way after having heard it. It's incredibly impressive, but it's so like varied in styles, that I don't know in what kind of mood I would have to be to revisit that.

| 4.1 excellent | Erwann S. EMERITUS | April 13th 21 | Ok so this is his debut album? Damn, can't wait to hear his "mature" music then. Despite suffering from a slight midway dull and showcasing a tad too manifestly its influences (y'know that cool soul/r&B/hop music), the record is a fantastic exercise in eclectism: from soul to funk to punk to rap to r&b, the music navigates between many genres thanks to a tight band and Owusu's vocal elasticity. The dude can moan, scream, rap, sing, and even talk (!!!) beautifully, carefully revealing his ultra-modern concept album.
