3.5 great | lz41 | September 20th 23 | 2013's "Push the Sky Away" was a pivotal Bad Seeds album on two fronts. One, Warren Ellis' strings and keyboards became the centre of the arrangements. Two, Cave's lyrical style of rubbing the non-sensical alongside the mundane was launched. Both approaches continued through the next two Bad Seeds albums and the pair's eventual collaboration seemed like a linear eventuality. What is surprising on "Carnage" is its best song: 'White Elephant' is the most explicitly political song in Cave's oeuvre and not only references the Black Lives Matter movement but anticipates the January 6 Capitol Building attacks as well.

3.0 good | ExoskeletalJunction | March 21st 22 | 14th March: Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage (art/chamber pop, 2021)
There are some nice string arrangements, and Cave occasionally taps a melancholy that
resonates with me quite well, but I think this is just a bit too singer-songwritery for me -
the focus is certainly far more on the lyrics than music. Not that there’s anything wrong
with that, but as someone who doesn’t care for lyrics, being left with them and a focus on
Cave’s less than magnificent voice doesn’t give me a whole lot to grasp.

3.0 good | charlopiano | September 22nd 21 | I really need to look at the lyrics cause musically this did nothing for me.

4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | September 14th 21 | In what everyone and their grandma probably already observed, this is Cave and Ellis finally gripping that semi-ambient musical concept by its mane and running full course with it. Everything that has been orchestrally alluded to on 'Skeleton Tree', synthetically on 'Ghosteen' and to a lesser extent on 'Push the Sky Away' has been perfected here. And all you needed to do was plug Warren Ellis more into the writing process, as you always should.

4.0 excellent | MisterDoe | July 24th 21 | Apart from the wonderful arrangements, pristine mixing, and enveloping songwriting, Carnage has some of the most emotional moments of the year. Seriously, some of these songs are really emotionally draining.

3.0 good | ajcollins15 | March 10th 21 | I can see the wide appeal of this record. It is lethargic and passionate with a lot of poetic lyrics on loneliness and longing. However, Nick Cave has always had the glaring issue of putting way too much in his music that always comes off as pretentious. To be honest most of this album is Nick crooning over lush but minimal chamber pop and industrial instrumentals that are eerily similar to David Bowie?s ?Black Star?. I don?t know I get the album and I see why a lot of people like it, but it is really nothing special with its lack of originality and interesting presence from front to back.

3.1 good | Erwann S. STAFF | March 8th 21 | It's grand, it's beautiful, it's melancholic, but the arrangements do not bring as much emotional value as Cave's latest records - mainly Push the Sky Away and Skeleton Tree. The cinematic vibe is evident from the get-go, but it failed to summon any kind of imagery, maybe because of how subdued the record tries to be, especially after "White Elephant".

3.0 good | fog CONTRIBUTOR | March 5th 21 | This has some good moments, but as with most of Cave's output over the years, I still find his delivery is, for the most part, overwrought - it's a taste I've just never acquired. Also, the way he uses repetition will resonate with some people, but for me it's hit and miss. I get why people are loving this though.

4.0 excellent | ThyCrossAwaits | March 1st 21 | This is MILES better than Ghosteen. Honestly we all know we?re probably not getting the punk-ish Blixa Cave anymore, and as far as his work with Warren this is a fantastic entry.

1.0 awful | Gyromania | March 1st 21 | apparently my soundoff and rating for this were too much for a sputnik mod to handle so now sowing's soundoff is missing context

3.0 good | blurred vision-ary | February 28th 21 | Cave's charisma, voice and lyrics salvage some of this, but just like Ghosteen, the arrangements are uninspired and dull. White Elephant is the only true standout.

4.5 superb | markjamie | February 28th 21 | Want to avoid being shot in the face... but this makes 3 unbelievable albums in a row for Nick (even if it's not technically a Bad Seeds album)

4.5 superb | juiceviaorange | February 27th 21 | Wow - this is so good. I selfishly wish it was a "Bad Seeds" release but that's beside the point. Such a gorgeous, poignant album. Sparsely arranged albums like this that still are diverse and fluid is another walk in the park for Nick and Warren. My expectations were certainly anything but low, but it is such an engaging beautifully arranged album and I'm so pleased. Definitely cut from the Push/Skeleton/Ghosteen trilogy cloth but its own beast altogether.
