The engineering/mix on this is superb. Zao has been super inconsistent on that front over the years, but they nailed it this time.

This is dark shit. Weyandt is the pilot here, laying personal struggle with a voice that is as fucking filthy as ever. He's belching lyrics into a cascade of all things disgusting supported by atonal harmonics and a dirty sludge sound. This all-around brutality is however counterbalanced by a starker insistence on atmosphere - hence the post-metal(core) linings. Still, there's fat to trim, and that might be the album's only trve fault.

Into the 4th decade of being a band, Zao yet again show why they're a perenniel metalcore band and a cornerstone for the genre, releasing yet another relentless record where the band appears to have not skipped a single beat. Take notes kids, this is how its done.

That mid-breakdown on the title track fucking slays. Really solid effort by Zao. Desolate and heavy, this album's atmosphere is suffocating.

Zao are a rare instance of a band regrouping after hiatus to start releasing actually better music than before. Maybe it's a hot take, it seems quite mild to me.
