By no means bad, but so repetitive. Like much djent, this just does not venture far beyond endless chug-chug. It is layered as all hell, and impressive, but some variation pls.

Undeniably catchy instrudjental metal, though the album becomes somewhat redundant. Sharp also toys with a few ambient songs but these serve little other than to relieve tension. 3.7/5.

I was ready to dismiss this as one of the slightly lame Sputnik fanboy enthusiasms that so often crop up on this site (see Converge, Bon Iver, Opeth, and so on). How wrong can you be? Instrumental excellence by a genuine musician. Cheers, Mr Sharp.

A very good effort from solo artist Cloudkicker (Ben Sharp), The Discovery is an instrumental metal album that is filled with catchy riffs and odd time signatures reminiscent to Meshuggah's Catch-33. Though unlike Catch-33, The Discovery also contains elements of ambient music that is displayed in songs like "Everything's Mirrors" and "Covington." Most of the songs are very similar in sound and structure and focus heavily on repetition of evolving riffs and patterns. Although some may understandably find it to be boring, others will simply fail to tire of its undeniable catchiness. A solid album that should be checked out, especially if you are a fan of Djent and/or Meshuggah

Instru-metal handled well. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but definitely enjoyable. Cut back a little on having too much going on at the same time and it'd be perfect. 3.6/5

I would definitely say that this is better than Beacons. Not by much, because all this stuff is amazing, but a little bit. Cloudkicker's QUALITY is what surprises me, for being basically a one-man band. And the shear Djentyness of this blows my socks off.

When it comes to instrumental music, the artist usually needs to work harder to cut through than if there was a vocalist. Cloudkicker does just that despite using any leads or solos, which is quite unbelievable. Chord progressions are really what the listener has to rely on to enjoy a song and luckily most of them are just perfect. The use of background noise and a few effects such as delay enhance the listening experience as well.
