Angry, aggressive, and also again two-sided. The first 7 tracks of this 17 minute EP are in your face, raw, and fast-paced death metal with some crust punk leanings. The last track is a typical doom metal slog fest that makes me want to stop listening because of how typical it is. So, pick your poison, first half brutality, or second half slow?ality.

Disappointing is all I can say. Feels like they rushed out something just for the sake of having new music out. All of the short songs are forgettable and the closer is great, but not enough to drag this EP above a 2.0 rating.

Although their previous material is far from bad, I don't particularly feel they've earned the near universal acclaim heaped upon them since Deserted. That being said, An Unexpected Reality is a welcome improvement on Gatecreepers "stadium death metal" (their words, not mine) aesthetic; the choice to more heavily embrace their hardcore roots has imbued their music the energy and punchiness that their previous material lacks. However, closing death/doom track "Emptiness" can't be overlooked either, as it might be the best song here. They would do well in the future to either fully tread the path of hardcore influence or doom inspiration, not the plodding middle ground they've been exploring for the last decade.

7 minutes of deathgrind headfuckery, followed by 11 minutes of death doom epicness. As Notrap nicely puts it in his rev, both parts do what they do quite straightforwardly - thus not reinventing anything - but they do it well: the first half will make your neck exercise fast, while the second one will make it exercise hard. A neckbreaking lil EP.

Gatecreeper going doom on last track was really something, keeping that vicious HM-2 mix of theirs. Straight out for lovers of Pallbearer or Bell Witch. Certainly doom knowledge acquired from their previous shared act Spirit Adrift.

Super fun mini album, and again: this band NEVER disappoints. Basically 7 short deathgrind song and one long doom riff fest (yes, it's pretty much doom). A perfect album to start a day with.

Holy shit this is some progression. A fun little EP where the first 7 tracks are short little bangers mixing between their death metal sound and incorporating some grindcore elements. The final track clocking in at just over 11 minutes builds up to an impressive melodic moment with a dab into black metal. Would love to see more of this take in their next LP.
