This is the Sunn O))) album that I have been waiting for. This band no longer consists of two guitarists with the same simple idea. Greg and Stephen have given us a masterful composition of orchestral drone metal.

They sound like theyre taking themselves so seriously, and whoever said the last part of aghartha sounds like one long fart is right, it's fucking hilarious.

This is their best effort to date. M&D surpassed my expectations and left quite an impression. There is just so much more present in the songs than in past releases and a lot more intensity to them. rSunn O))) have always released music that offered a love or hate relationship. If you are a Sunn O))) fan or if drone is your thing, do check out this album. It won't disappoint.

As far as I can tell is people like this because it's "different". I could rub my hairy balls on a mic and loop that for 30 minutes and say it is a bold spit in the face of muscial conventions, but it would be shit. So is Sunn O))) different? Yes. Can it be considered music? No. Is it by any stretch of the imagination good music? Fuck no.
So it's kind of like conceptual art, the concept may be very clever or even genius but I wouldn't waste my time on the piece itself, since the concept is what matters. Even then the concept behind this music is shit.

I do not understand the critical acclaim for this... I can barely call this music, it is unbearable to listen to. I try and be open to all types of music, I can listen to a lot of bands and genres which I wouldn't normally consider myself of and still enjoy them. I can sing along with crappy pop songs on the radio and still find some enjoyment in it. This, however, I cannot consider artistically valuable in any sense. Some people will swear by this album, there are a lot of people out there who consider this a masterpiece. I wish I could understand why, but to me this is little more than an abomination.

This time around Sunn O))) use a much wider arrange of sounds, such as an all women choir, bells, horns and even a harp. This really is Sunn O))) trying to push their hypnotic dark drone into new places. Their previous album "Black One" was dark, foreboding and one of my favourate albums, i thought all the extras would take away from that, but it really adds to the creepyness of the record, pray to the gods of drone.

Got this on vinyl the other day. First album I've heard from this band; dug the creepy atmosphere the lead-off track puts you in. "Alice" is a great way to end the album, leaves you in a mellow, relaxed mood. Highly recommend if you're looking for something different.

I am not surprised that the ratings for this one aren't normally distributed, but more bi-modal.
Well, what can I say about Monoliths and Dimensions . I am not an expert for Drone, but I obviously expected something more similar to extreme post rock/metal than to indie pop and was a little afraid that the strict, self-given musical limitations might lead to an artistically demanding, yet unlistenable piece of work.
Sunn O))) even exceeded my expectations with their uncompromising, unique, artful, brutal music and although I would have occasionally preferred a less dogmatic - meaning a more diversified - guitar sound I have to admit - to my own surprise - that Sunn O))) delivered an album that is as challenging as consumable. All four songs are great with "Alice" as the highlight where in the beginning the drone outbursts are nicely transformed into classical parts before the song gradually changes into a beautiful jazz finale. Almost 4.0 stars.
