This is one of the best Black Flag albums because of the emotive songwriting, lack of shitty guitar solos that would make great songs annoying later on, and the sludge metal experiments on side two with Rollins' sick screaming.

My War starts off quite well, seeing Black Flag slow
down considerably from what they have done before.
There are some entertaining riffs, with the album
being highlighted by Forever Time and The Swinging
Man. Unfortunately, from there the final three songs
slow down Even more, essentially to a doom pace.
This is not a good sound for Black Flag, as their
guitar is far too thin sounding, lacking the crunch
required for good doom. These three songs should
have absolutely been kept off the record.

Excellent opener/title-track, but none of the later tracks (bar "Three Nights" seem to pull me in. I understand that these guys were integral in shaping the 80's underground punk scene, but if we're rating on basis of enjoyment, this gets a 2.9/5.

This is where they invert their punk-to-Black Sabbath ratio. This time, the powerful punk testosterone only pumps up the Sabbath gloom. Side B is where they infamously slow the pace to be one of the first sludge works out there, although Side A has got its fair share of slower tunes compared to hardcore straightjacket. What adds to the record - and is also a bit frustrating at times - is how much Rollins' vocals and Ginn's guitar sound disconnected from the rest. Still, it's one of my favourite Black Flag recordings, because while the punch is somewhat gone, it was replaced with a dense self-hatred, both in terms of lyrics as well as the slow, doomy music. Also, keep in mind it was as heretical historically speaking as Dylan pluggin in his guitar in Bringing It All Back Home.

My War is apparently the first sludge album or something, good shit. The tracks are heavy, filled with emotion and power that I can appreciate in any album with this level of substance in the music.

I don't know.. I prefer My War than Damaged. I know it must sound weird but maybe it has to do with the fact that I started with this album. Opening song is just toooooo good. Agreed that it kinda drags at the end, but it's still a classic.

A very nice album which is half-and-half between genres. Interestingly enough, the first half is strictly loud, abrasive hardcore punk whereas the second half (believe it or not) is actually sludge tinged and slower paced. One of my personal Black Flag favorites, these guys know how to get me pumped up.
