I actually went into this wanting to give it a fair chance, and while it's not as bad as I was expecting, it is horribly one-note and monotonous. The majority of tracks follow the same structure of synth/electronic base track with a basic lead riff, then a heavy emphasis on the chorus, none of which are catchy enough to justify their overabundance. There are no real songs here that are cringe-inducing (Little Wonder does come close, the chorus of which is an almost tragic self-fulfilling prophecy for the band) but comparatively, none stand out on first listen, and all of the guest vocals feel terribly underutilized. It's a palatable album, sure, but very homogenous and uninspired.

Doesn't flow too well as an LP, though it does have some decent singles (they carry the album). I think the change is good, just not well executed overall and in certain songs.

Their new single 'Animals' came up on my radio mix today and it was so bad, I had to check who the band was. I was pretty surprised to see it was these guys. Was never a huge fan but man this shit was BAD.

I think on its own accord, this record is actually really solid. I think it's overlong and there are some filler tracks but it's still very enjoyable. I don't think it'll stand the test of time like some of their previous records, however. The simplistic patterns and songwriting make for a much more accessible listen but I think the novelty will wear off over time. Top tracks for me are "Dead Butterflies", "Impermanence", "Animals" and "An Ordinary Extinction."

Alright hot take here: I actully kind of like this. Its radio friendly metalcore but not done as yet another that's the spirit copy. However, that being said this albums biggest problem is that it is bloated as hell. This album has no business being 15 tracks and having a hour long runtime. The album did not need the filler when their is already about 11 strong tracks and it really does sour the listening experence. Listing to this album goes from "this is the stuff" to "okay please can this song end so we can get to the next one" over the course of this albums runtime. Honestly this album would of been much better if tracks 11-14 were cut, that would be a 4.5 record for me.

Production is mindnumbingly flat and compressed, with vocals that sit way too high in the mix. Honestly, if this record had more gritty production I think it would've actually made this sound better. Quite weird for a 'poppy' record. This also reminds me way too much of Bring me the Horizon. That shouldn't have to be bad, because I thought their last few records where still very good. I've read somewhere they've worked quite a bit with Jordan Fish on this record, and Sam and Oli shared their 'learning to sing' process or whatever, but man, that doesn't need to make it sound so identical to the material Jordan and Oli released... The melodies sound like they are ripped straight from a BMtH record, and the fact that Sam's vocals sound just like Oli's in the harshly sung parts does NOT help... The guitar parts are boring most of the time, and mostly, this records just feels soulless to me. Partly due to the production, partly due to the (cliché) lyrics, and partly due to boring, samey songwriting.

Is this better than I expected; yes. Is this good; no. Does this change my opinion on Architects; no, but not in the way you would think. Architects have never been a good band in my eyes. I know they hit a rather large stride in the djent seen during the 2010s, but to me, it was very much unoriginal. Now on this new album, they continue to be unoriginal, but still sound average with that unoriginality. Heavily influenced by Bring me the Horizon, but with nobody to it.

It's not the change in sound that bothers me. It's not even that I think the music is bad. It's that Architects are capable of so much better than what they chose to give us here. You can go with a more radio friendly sound without sacrificing the quality of song writing. Even The Here and Now was more inspired than this.

Very bland material compared to previous albums. Over half the tracks go in one ear and out the other. Specific problems this album shows in the majority of the songs are: Sam's vocals are underwhelming, the slow, spoken vocals in almost all of the songs ruin any momentum the songs build up for themselves, sterile and uninteresting metalcore guitar, and some of the lyrical content have downright cringe-worthy lines. That being said, in the large tracklisting, there are songs that are not too bad compared to the rest due to them standing out from the rest due to trying new things or simply being better than the blander tracks (Goliath, Demi-God, Impermanence, Dying is Absolutely Safe, An Ordinary Extinction - each to their own extent are worth checking out).
