I love this album because of how bizarre it is. It feels like wandering through the
rebuilt husk of a folk scene that had a nuke dropped on it 50 years ago. It feels like
walking through a bad neighborhood and seeing some interesting, disgusting, confusing
stuff before coming across the best rundown BBQ place you've ever had in your life. It
feels like a thought fighting its way through a disordered brain until it finally forces
a moment of clarity, before inevitably getting sucked back down in quicksand. Just look
at the first two songs, Amadeus is a grating, white noise onslaught that melts down to
the earth's core before it instantly turns into Rowboat, a musically straightforward
country song Johnny Cash heard and said he could have written himself in his younger wild
days. The lyrics are nearly nonsense but I know EXACTLY what Beck is conveying. It's
impossible to describe this album and the journey of listening to it but
that's the best I've got. You'll either love it or hate it and you'll probably hate it.
