Wildly overrated album. I only find two songs enjoyable, the opening track and the title track. The rest is just derivative sonic drivel. The previous album is a classic though.

Too much of Ozzy Osbournes work in the 1980s is forgotten. The general public tends to pick up Blizzard of Ozz and then they are done with Ozzy. However, other albums such as Diary of a Madman are just as good, if not better than Blizzard of Ozz. The second release from the madman features just as strong of rockers in Over The Mountain and S.A.T.O, both of which share a unique style from each other, S.A.T.O especially having a very NWOBHM touch. The album shows its progressive elements on the title track, which is a progressive metal epic in which Randy Rhoads completely shines. With only one weak track, Diary of a Madman succeeds in being a great album and a fantastic swan song for the guitar great Randy Rhoads.

My favorite Ozzy album, slightly better than "Blizzard of Ozz" in my opinion, one of the best heavy metal albums of the 80's. Randy Rhoads, before his death, is legendary in this album. Many classics, among "Over the mountain", "Fly high again", "S.A.T.O.", "Believer" and the title track.

Max Norman's production on this album is a notable improvement upon BLIZZARD OF OZZ and just sounds better
overall. I know a lot of people are partial to BLIZZARD because it was such an amazing solo debut for Ozzy, but
for me it's a toss up. DIARY also has a great deal to offer, namely "Over The Mountain", "You Can't Kill Rock And
Roll" (a great anthem), "Believer" and the awesome title track. Randy's playing on "Flying High Again" and "S. A.
T. O." is also quite amazing. I suppose the lesser tracks are "Little Dolls" (with that great Lee Kerslake drum
intro) and the ballad "Tonight", but even these are enjoyable. Oh - and don't even bother with the 2002 version
featuring re-recorded bass and drum tracks by Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin. That was just a shameful move by
the Osbourne's to avoid paying Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake due credit for their substantial contributions.
Tampering with DIARY and BLIZZARD was simply sacrilege and should have never happened. The original band is all I
ever want to hear when queuing up this album or BLIZZARD.

Somehow my favorite, although Blizzard is a better record...rSaw RR on the Blizzard tour (general admission in Springfield, MA!!!!!!), and Brad Gillis on the Diary tour 2 months after RR was killed.

Osbourne's follow-up to his famous Blizzard of Ozz, the second and last record to be recorded with his original and arguably strongest backing formation, before guitarist's Rhandy Roads young death broke it apart, is yet another solid, although slightly less memorable moment in The Prince of Darkness' career. Diary of a Madman has, like its predecessor, its fair share of memorable tunes, especially in Over the Mountain, Flying High Again and the dark, somewhat epic closing title track. Fans of classic 80's metal will be enjoyed, but not amazed.
