5.0 classic | Progmaster85 | January 18th 10 | Perfection. Absolute perfection. Agalloch effortlessly combines folk, doom, death, black and post-metal into a powerhouse of a record. My reason for this being my favorite Agalloch album is because it has less filler than the others; it's without boring/repetitive tracks like "Odal" or "The Lodge". Every piano note, every variation of the acoustic guitar, every second is worth your time if you are a fan of Black/Folk metal. I truly consider this record timeless; and I don't think that Agalloch can top this immense perfection.

3.5 great | EasterInTheBatcave | June 20th 16 | Agalloch's debut is an atmospheric blend of folk and black metal that showcases a lot of potential but doesn't always live up to it. Tempo and dynamic changes aren't handled well; they're a little sloppy, a little primitive. The production is underwhelming. The record is somewhat drawn out, too: "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline," a disappointing multi-parter, falls victim to this. However, there are some seriously great moments ("The Melancholy Spirit"), and Agalloch, even on this release, prove masters of atmosphere.

4.5 superb | Xenorazr | January 6th 16 | The atmospheric reprises are an interesting aspect in Agalloch's debut, whose very title informs you what you need to know about this metal band's stylistic choices. While the varying vocal styles can get distracting, they do complement the folk-like influences and gloomy themes found throughout. Dark and harsh without being unintelligible, Pale Folklore is ultimately an album that begs one to become lost in, especially when life seems bleak or otherwise uncertain.rAlso, rasputin's soundoff is too damn perfect.

4.6 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | February 24th 20 | The first installment of a legendary discography. The music reflects the transition from Autumn to Winter on Pale Folklore. While there are moments where the snow never lets you rest, the calmer parts all feature this doomy - and almost unique in their discography - guitar sound. Whenever the cold wind is not whipping your face, lull moments let you enjoy the mixture of white snow and brown leaves in the now quiet forest. Even with this kind of imagery, this is not Agalloch's best record: what makes this stand out less than the two 2000s ones is the production: the bass is nearly inaudible, the drums are quite low in the mix (they're not incredible but do the job), and Haughm's clean vocals are not at their best yet. However, the band managed to effortlessly blend folk metal (without any flute, yay), atmospheric black metal (without cliche tremolos), doom metal (without being boring), post-rock (without being mere crescendocore), and progressive metal (ugh) to create a true sonic maelstrom utterly new at the time, and never replicated afterwards. Before Wolves in the Throne Room came up with Cascadian Black Metal, Agalloch perfected it and wrote an album for the ages that still manages to pale compared to its two successors. As global warming deprives us of snow, one question arises: will I ever see my city draped in a white veil again? I don't know, but during the grey days when nothing falls but rain, I'll still have Agalloch to help me remember what Winter sounds and feels like.

4.5 superb | SAPoodle | April 10th 12 | One of the most stunning extreme metal albums I've ever heard, Agalloch has made a record that transcends genre and defies convention. The production is what seals it for me - murky, but brilliantly atmospheric. Just listen to Hallways of Enchanted Ebony or The Melancholy Spirit and you'll understand.

4.5 superb | MikeySockbat | January 22nd 09 | Absolutely stunning! This is the type of music I have always yearned for. The despair of black metal, the atmosphere of doom, the beautiful use of acoustics and instrumental passages, terrific lyrics. It may not be technically amazing but the songwriting is magnificently done and that will always be the defining factor that makes this one of the best bands in the world. 'She Paints Fire Across The Skyline' is one of the most epic pieces of music I have ever heard. Everytime I listen to it I get a different picture and story painted in my head. That alone should be testament to how great this band is.

3.5 great | GamamJ | April 16th 20 | VERY good. A super atmospheric album ranging from folk and black metal to ambient. The three-part opener and closer are stunning, however I found the mid-part to be filled with too much... meddlying interludery.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | November 1st 15 | I think that the reason folk and black metal work so well together is that they are both, at their core, relatively simple, and make fantastic use of atmosphere and aesthetic to help give the simplistic nature of the music texture and depth. Agalloch is one of the premier bands that use this combination, even mixing the folk elements with atmospheric metal in general to create soaringly beautiful folk metal. There isn't anything that technically impressive on the record, but what it lacks in technicality it makes up for in its pronounced sense of atmosphere and melody. Occasionally, the vocals can stray into cringeworthy territory, but on the whole they are solid and alternate between screamed and cleanly-sung depending on the style. Yes, Agalloch would eventually go on to do bigger and better things, but the blueprint for those achievements was laid very well by Pale Folklore.

3.0 good | BRAman22 | May 22nd 14 | I'm not a big fan of two of the three songs in the opening trilogy, but the third part is pretty cool. The first half of the album sounds like it would be a good movie soundtrack, but, for the most part, isn't all that exciting to listen to alone. The second half of the album is clearly better than the first, with some pretty decent songs on it.

0.0 | FreePizzaDay | January 26th 10 | Honestly, this album is just perfect for winter. It's bleak, nihilistic, and yet, is serene and peaceful. Agalloch perfectly blends folk, classical, and black metal flawlessly, and the result is a unique album that can be listened to many times over again.

4.0 excellent | Ceminon | February 7th 09 | When you compare this album to Agalloch's later ones, you can tell that the band had some 'growing' to do, musically. Still, this is a pretty amazing album that has that distinctive Agalloch sound.

4.5 superb | CrazyFool84 | November 10th 08 | A fantastic debut full-length from a mind-blowing band. Pale Folklore builds from the style Agalloch had been working at since their early demos, with everything culminating nicely on this offering. This paves the way for the groundbreaking "The Mantle", and showcases some of the more black metal influences the band has in their repitoire.

4.5 superb | Evolution666 | August 22nd 08 | This album has set the standard for melodic black metal. Fusing different genres like black, folk, melodic and progressive metal, Agalloch has achieved a true masterpiece. Right now my area is getting pummeled an incredibly strong storm and I feel this album was made for just such occasions in human life. With a 360 degree scene of destruction and dismay songs like The Misshapen Stead and Dead Winter Days give the most eerie yet tranquil feelings when one walks outside to see all that he has lay in ruins. The atmosphere of the album is simply breath taking and, dare I say at some points, exceeds bands such as Opeth. Bottom line this album is at least worth looking into by any metal fan, the piano passages, melancholy guitars and dark atmosphere of this album is what any fan of Opeth or Katatonia will regret passing up.

5.0 classic | Dakota West Foss STAFF | April 23rd 08 | A Black/Folk/Doom/whatever you would like to call it album that dances with perfection. Though simplicity is a main factor throughout, this is not an easy listen by any means, yet that is part of its charm. Agalloch NEVER conform to what you want to hear, but instead ask you to listen to what they wish to convey and what they convey here is a perfect winter scene with epic climaxes and awe inspiring atmosphere. A true achievement in what metal is and tries to be.

4.5 superb | LostViking | December 25th 07 | I've listened to a large amount of music over the years. "Pale Folklore" achieves a "winter" atmosphere unlike any other.
