A record should be judged on its own merit and not by any personal feelings or experiences, yet at the same time it's clearly unavoidable due to individuality and it all being opinions in the end. Yours Truly's "Self Care" arrived in the midst of the '2020 Haze' where things felt uncertain and many were medicating on things to keep spirits up. That's where "Self Care" kind of hit at least for me, but objectively and in retrospect this is a disappointing follow-up to their "Afterglow" EP. Not to mention, in live performances the band constantly drops the key of all their songs by 3 half-steps, which is evidential that there's a lot of post-production involvement to get the tracks to sound right. Still, the great songwriting and style is here with 'Composure', 'Funeral Home', and 'Undersize' - all standouts that work today and also capture that feeling of brief joy that was felt 4 years ago.
