Hot damn. This is a pleasant surprise even after the impressive singles. Doyle from Cloakroom brings in all those sludgy, slowly moving, creeping big walls of shoegaze and the band and album are all the better for it.

Better than TOT, way better than DOTB, and completely on par with GOE. Honestly, could end up being better than GOE, in time. The addition of Doyle really leaves its' mark on the album.

Damn shame Hum released a mighty album this year, otherwise The Great Dismal would have claimed the gaze AOTY award. It's basically got everything you could ask from a gaze album: a t m o s p h e r e, a strong sense of melody despite the occasional hard riffing sections, melancholy - both in the vocals and the music. The band truly shine when they decide to fully accomplish a song's vision: whether it's by bringing sludgy elements to the table ("Blue Mecca"), or by making dem dynamics shine ("In Blueberry Memories"). When they do push their creative vision that far, it's a winner. 3.9

I?m just happy they went back to studio 4 for this. Last record was such a let down, and production was a big part of the problem, even with its high points. This album is a much more cohesive record. Production is on point. This may be their best record yet.
