Georgous Folk album. The performances and songwriting here are organic, raw and heartwarming, some of Lenkers best to date.

Adrianne's talent and song-writing abilities shine overwhelmingly here and I am increasingly ascertained that my dislike for Big Thief comes from the creative input of mostly other members of the band and/or Adrianne compromising her own. That being said, this album is as simple and unpresumptive as its title suggests. Every song features guitar usually playing in the same style, same key and similar progression patterns, and Adrianne's soft vocals. Only rarely is the album adventurous enough to reach outside of that orderliness, but even that is in minimal-most way possible: a different vocal key for a moment, a more complex guitar work here and there for a brief period of time.

To me this is unquestionably Adrianne's strongest full-length to date. It is more coherent without sudden jumps in atmosphere or from folk to country for example, and there aren't really any bad songs - the guitar at least is always nice. My main gripes are vocal. Firstly, I find that it gets a bit too whiney shakey for too long at times; and secondly, this isn't true of every song but sometimes she leaves no space for the instruments and just hums constantly like on 7 myyyYyyYy daAaaAAauuuUUghteeeEeEeEr. So it gets a bit tiresome after a few songs, although in a vacuum most would be nice. And I do appreciate that the songs do sometimes leave breathing space for the instruments, wether in the intro/outro or more rarely within the song - the closer being a prime example Some of the tracks have more intricate strumming and some are more conventional or minimalistic, but the sequencing is well done in that aspect and it brings nice variety. 1,2 kinda 3 although earlier on it's not as compelling, 6 with its engaging guitar, the more minimal 8 and the simpler 9, and the very well constructed and initially peaceful closer are highlights. As I said the rest is pretty fine too except the voice gets a bit much in the mid-album. If I grab an Adrianne LP for my lib it'll be this one. 3.7

Pretty, subtle indie folk. I never really enjoyed Big Thief's material, but this one managed to momentarily grab me. Repetitiveness is the album's greatest asset and fault: on the one hand, these guitar strummings can sometimes create a sweet vacuum in which the listener can get lost in ("anything", "half return"). On the other hand, the songs that do not benefit from a tight songwriting tend to overstay their welcome. As a whole, however, it's some of the prettiest indie folk I've heard in 2020.
