Incredibly and almost shockingly amazing. HIL have blown all the doors open with It Hates
You. Taking the melodic flavor of I am Hollywood and the grit of Suck Out The Poison and
combining them and stretching their sound even farther into an epic stoner metal sound. All
the musicians here put on an incredible performance. But what really hits the spot here is
the amount of melodic/emotional depth that is shown here with Tanbouz's layered guitar
work/drop G (yes that low) crushing riffs and Croom's intense claustrophobic yet absurd
vocals (and harmonies.....and Bibis Ellison female vocals to add more intensity). The record
is gritty, weird, and oddly beautiful. HIL have really outdone themselves here and have put
them in place for one of the best albums of 09...and if not it's certainly one of the
biggest surprises this year.

The timeline of HIL's progression aligns quite perfectly with the evolution of my tastes through moving from HS band to college theory classes and lectures on music's historical progression to more and more intensely radical attempts at doing things that have never been done. And I've found that every time HIL releases a new album there's even more substance and creativity under the surface than the last. I become more obsessed with them with every single listen because every time something new strikes me and I realize how subtly advanced the things they're doing are. It's pretty obvious that the vast majority of people hate the direction HIL has taken since IAH and they've been criticized for alienating audiences and I've concluded that the reason behind this is that they've gradually outgrown the audience they initially attracted that just doesn't get it anymore. All the beautiful nuances from IAM that were so universally hailed are still there, they're just so much more subtle and cultured. Also, that the members of HIL, really don't care if anyone gets it our not. They're making music that is fantastic on a level that's so far over the heads of the masses and they know it and that's all that matters.

He Is Legend craft a superb album encompassing everything they've really been playing for years live. If you have ever seen the band live, then you know that they don't play like I am Hollywood nor do they play like Suck Out the Poison. This is the disc they wanted to make and it shows. The tracks are catchy, aggressive, super melodic and most definitely meant to be played loud. If you liked any of their previous works or just like progressive rock then give this a spin or three.

While at first it is an interesting listen, the novelty eventually wears off and you realize that, ultimately, this is an experimental failure in HIL's catalogue. Here's to hoping the next one doesn't stoop to even lower places.

Really quite fantastic. Whereas "Suck Out the Poison" was a grower, this one hits you right away. This is really the product (not the sum) of IAH and SOTP. But it's not only that, there's plenty of new elements added in that really bring it to a new level.
Call it ((IAH * SOTP) + NEW_ELEMENTS) = Superb Album.

On It Hates You, there are some awesome tracks on this album and some horrible ones. It seems like this album is the weakest of all of He Is Legends albums, and the most drug induced haha. While they will never achieve I Am Hollywood status again, It Hates You is an enjoyable listen, its just good...not great.

an amazingly haunting album, you need to forget about what preceded this disc, forget about what expectations it needed to meet, and what sort of genre it needed to follow. This is the cd that followed suck out the poison, it wasn't the cd that followed 10 mins after, it was the progression. And it is a brilliant ride from start to finish, as you feel the crooning of crooms voice, matched by every instrument in the band, with them all doing their part to rip you apart at every instance, yet make you feel a little special inside. And thats what this disc does, makes us feel. It's a shame that there be no more he is legend.

he is legend change for the worse. again. some truly fantastic moments sprinkled here and there, but overall, the album's not very memorable besides the superb album art

I could see people disliking Cult of She and Mean Shadows because they come off as random and have some weaker passages. However, there are a few sections of Cult of She that have a strong Meshuggah influence and a dirty groove. The problem is having to suffer through annoying passages to get to those ultra-groovy riffs that Adam has taken to the next level. Mean Shadows has a lot to offer melodically, but again, it has some sections that shouldn't have made the cut.
