This is a different kind of Devin on display here. Loud and quiet, soothing and chaotic, it's like a beautiful contradiction on record.

Ki is at its weakest during the metal sections which, compared to the mellow sections, are nowhere near as engrossing. Also, "Demon League" is an unnecessary inclusion-- "Quiet Riot" would have been the perfect end to the album (with the sample of Devin leaving the studio from "Demon League" put on to the end). Despite these complaints though, Ki is overall a masterful record. The production is superlative, as are the performances, and the atmosphere is captivating. The "tense" feel Devin went for is perfectly captured. Ki isn't flawless, but it is still an exceptional record. It speaks to Townsend's incredible discography that an album this good is not even in his top five records.

Quite a mixed album. For an acoustic album, there's surprising amounts of death metal. Whilst I like the sound, I'm not overboard about it, but some of the songs have great atmospheres - tense anger on Distruptr, or tranquility on Terminal. Essential for Devin fans.

Words cannot describe this album, but I will attempt to anyways. Take everything you've ever heard by Devin Townsend, and throw it out the window. Go outside, light it on fire and then extinguish it with liquid nitrogen 35 minutes later. This is nothing like any of his other albums and a style of music that hopefully he will revisit.

I feel this album is kind of pretentious... for lack of a better word... it's art for art's sake if you know what I mean. Now, I'm the biggest fan of Devin and all of his work, but I liked Ziltoid better. I know a lot has changed in Dev's life in the last few years, since the breakup of SYL, and I understand that these changes led to this record - and the next ones as well - but I liked it when he was more angry, or when he was mixing aggression with beautiful melodies perfectly. But Ki is for the most part just guitar wanking.

A nice return to form for Townsend, and a good start to his forth-coming mini-onslaught of albums to be. The chilled out atmosphere to the majority of the record plays nicely with Devy's skill, both musically and for composing. There's also a nice blend of soft and heavy here, which is why I don't understand the overstatement of it's calm presence. Nevertheless, the album's quite enjoyable, and a possible front-runner a top record of the year (in some form of media or another).
