An improvement over the debut, it just about is a 3. DP?w songwriting is still nowhere near stellar, as is shown by a load of covers on here too. Their sound is a bit more hard-edged and bluesier here than on the debut, and some tracks like my fav Wring That Neck show the incredible cjemistry and skill between Blackmore and Lord that would be insteumental (no pun intended) in future DP. I also really enjoy the peogginess of these earlier albums.

Building slightly on the overwhelmingly psychedelic debut, this album still feels in that vibe, and the band still has room for improvement in terms of songwriting. Nevertheless, this is still a very good album.

Even even if it failed to catch the intensity of Purple's live performances "The Book of Taliesyn" remains a very interesting album. "Wring That Neck", "Kentucky Woman", "Exposition" or "Shield" are my favourite songs.
