Fightstar deliver another ambitious LP with 'Be Human', this time adding orchestral arrangements to their blend of aggression & melody. It works a treat, giving the album a cinematic feel that proves the quartet's songwriting maturity. Diversity also exists; ranging from the offbeat ('Whisperer') to pop ('Mercury Summer'), and from dance-rock ('Tonight We Burn') to metal ('Damocles'). Without a filler track, it is the anthemic 'The English Way' & epic 'War Machine' which stand out, the latter's chill-inducing finale being the musical moment of 2009! Recommended Tracks: War Machine, The English Way, Colours Bleed To Red, Whisperer & Chemical Blood.

Fightstar's poppiest release. Simple song structures and catchy choruses are abound; however, the addition of a symphony adds a welcome layer of nuance and bombast to the proceedings. I wish the band had taken more risks with the songwriting, but as it stands this is an enjoyable record, if coming off as somewhat of a missed opportunity. (Also, what the Hell is up with that album art? Horrible.)

Fightstar take the more experimental direction of 2007's One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours and move in a more commercial direction with follow-up Be Human - perhaps to show up their prior label that had wanted them to be more marketable to begin with - also adding in the addition of choir accompaniment and symphonic orchestration via the work of Audrey Riley at Air Studios. The result is a remarkably strong collection of tracks by itself, if weaker production-wise in comparison to the band's first two albums. What really hurts Be Human, though, are its songs' incredibly laughable sets of lyrics: honestly, not many single tracks here make sense at all. Charlie Simpson seems to be singing about things in a dream world, with "Tonight We Burn" and perhaps "Never Change" being the lone exceptions. Again, the songs themselves are strong and catchy, but these lyrics are just too much to bare; this was a problem on One Day Son[. . .], but less so on debut The Grand Unification. Fightstar have everything they need to excel to the top of the UK rock scene, but if they want to be more successful they need to level with their audience a bit more. Keep the hooks coming, boys, but leave the penned shit at home next time. Be relevant to your audience: you know, uh - be human, or at least something like the rest of us.

Imo, Fightstar's best release to date. The songs are all diverse, and very catchy. My favourite would have to be "Mercury Summer"- have you guys seen that stupidly hot girl in the music video for it?

With guitars amped up and an orchestra behind them, Fightstar craft a brilliant piece of rock music, and 'craft' is most definitely the right word. There is such care taken to build this album to its explosive and frequent climaxes that it is impossible to describe it in any other way. It's not a masterpiece, but it certainly suggests a band that is capable of one; melodic, diverse and delivered with conviction, Be Human might just be the record that makes the world sit up and listen.

Honestly this took me entirely by surprise. I had no interest in Fightstar previously but after a few listens of this I can say it is by far the best album I've listened to this year. I've even been back and listened to the whole previous discography and I liked it! They are one of the most under rated Brittish bands around. Like most, I had my pre-conceptions I'll admit but Charlie has prooved his worth with this record. You're a fool to not listen to this because of his heritage (and there are three other members too!).

This is Fightstar's most solid offering yet in their so far enjoyable career. It contains all elements used in previous CD's, but gains a fair amount of maturity, and is tied together by the epic orchestra that lingers in the background for the majority of the album.
