| 3.5 great | BRAman22 | June 1st 25 | Overall pretty fun groove/nu metal. Frontloaded with best songs so back half can drag in places.

| 3.0 good | inside | December 18th 12 | this is the debut album by chimaira released in 2001, this album features a more of a nu metal / industrial metal sound, i like this album, but it is very basic for chimaira, on the other hand i give them credit for the fact that this is their first album... a good effort, some of the songs on here are very strong

| 3.0 good | Nytro | November 8th 12 | This album really didn't help Chimaira's career at all. It didn't sell shit, didn't have a decent single, and there was virtually no promotion. But, I feel as if there are a lot of good ideas displayed throughout this album. The black metal atmosphere of "Sphere" and "Let Go" along with some death metal influences from "This Present Darkness" appear on this album and make songs like "Dead Inside" and "Painting the White to Grey" sound a little less nu-metal. The main problem with this album is that the production sucks, too many samples. Rob Arnold and Jason Hagar can play faster than many Nu-metal guitarists, but their riffs are boring. Andols is the best member of the band on this album but after 8 songs it's the same double-bass pattern over and over, and Mark Hunter doesn't do anything special. Mediocre cleans, bad "poor poor me" lyrics, and screams that sound like they don't belong on this album. I recommend "Dead Inside", "Severed", "Lumps", "Painting the White to Grey", and "Sphere." Oh, and their other albums.

| 2.0 poor | Valhall | December 12th 07 | This album was absolutely horrid. Had this been the first Chimaira album I listened to, I would have never given them another chance. Thankfully, they stepped up and dropped the nu-metal out of things on their next record.
If it was ever possible for a debut major label release to be worse than a self-released EP, this is it. How Chimira could put out such a blistering EP, This Present Darkness, on thier own time and money, and then put out the wierdest, most uncomfortable feeling album when the opportunity was handed to them on a silver planet is beyond me. Choppy, lack of any flow, and lack of any kind of songwriting structure or talent are all things that describe this record. Thankfully, they learned thier lesson and grew enormously as musicians after this record.

| 0.0 | Blurry | August 17th 07 | Chimaira was at this time, another young, underdeveloped band presented to Roadrunner by Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares. The resulting album is a perfect example of generic nu metal. From the chugga-chugga riffs to Mark Hunter's constipated vocal attack, this album just drones on and on without breaking any new ground or connecting with the listener. In fact, the only notable thing about this album is the fact that the band behind it managed to have a successful career afterwards.
