The production on this album shines, but juxtaposed with some par for the course vocals and lyrics from Swift, it doesn't do much to stand out in a year full of excellent pop music. In need of some paring down, but at least organic shampoo commercials and coming of age movies will have their soundtracks taken care of for the next four years.

This album absolutely slaps. I was wondering when she'd finally move out of the pop stuff, which she's admittedly a master of at this point, and really strip the music down and let her voice shine without any other bullshit, and she's done exactly that here. the last great american dynasty is a fantastic little bop, exile with Bon Iver is just as every bit as good as I hoped it was going to be, illicit affairs just tears at the heartstrings, and I actually had to rewind mad woman to make sure I heard the lyrics right because holy SHIT Taylor dropping F-bombs is something I didn't expect here at all, and we can't forget betty, which sounds about as close to Taylor coming out as bisexual as she can get without actually doing it (I'm about 95% positive that "James" is just referring to herself since she's named after James Taylor). This is by far her most mature album to date, and a pretty easy contender for album of the year.

Her writting skills are even more pornounced in this album. Incredible. A bit too long, did not enjoy the last couple of songs. But it is an incredible body of Work. Seven, August and The 1 are absolutely incredible.

This is Taylor's safest and blandest record imo, continuing the trend set by Lover. Despite the pristine prod and lovely instrumentation at times, the fact that she still sings like it's generic pop makes it all really boring. There is no spice and a general scarcity of ideas Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for this, but I have no desire to try again really. 1 is a nice intro track, 2 is nice but bland, 3's pretty, then 4's probably the worst of the record, simplistic, overlong, and with out of place guest vox. By 5 I was already falling asleep. Thankfully the mid-record improves, with 6-8 all being nice songs that finally have some interesting ideas. Again 9 has a nice intro but as soon as she sings it gets boring. There is one vocal idea at 2:05 and it doesn't come back. Same thing for 10. 11 is pretty I guess although there is no transition into 12 which is eh alright. I have to say 13 does have really nice ambient textures and works quite well. 14 sees the return of country Taylor, and while I don't enjoy it I have to say the end track is the only moment this record ever has energy (which is needed with vox like these) and I enjoyed it for that. 15 would be a cool intro track too but at this point of the album feels boring, while 16 furthers the downward energy curve with a pretty but very soft piano track to conclude on just flat a note as the rest of the album - it is super predictable and you just want it to end quick. 2.3

Wow Taylor tries something different? The chamber pop/indie folk tags will sure make it more acceptable for music nerds to dig her work. Still, this is unmistakably a Taytay record: there are too many songs and it's way too long. While the Dessner songs sound good and the Antonoff ones are Antonoff-goes-chamber, the whole record somehow falls into the background around the halfway mark. Same same, but different.

It's excellent. Aaron Dessner is a wonderful contributor: this has the exact vibe of an earlier The National record and the stripped-down production pairs beautifully with Taylor's vocals. Tracks like "mad woman" come across like a cut from Trouble Will Find Me - just replace the languid sorrow with bottled-up anger. As a whole, it's simple, heartfelt, and the lyrics are pretty solid. Album highlights include Bon Iver on the desolate "exile" and "betty", which feels like the perfect bridge between Taylor Swift in 2020 and the Taylor Swift that wrote Red in 2012. There's nothing as openly raw or daring as found on the highlights of Norman Fucking Rockwall or Fetch The Bolt Cutters, but the strength here - just like on the best The National cuts - is the devastating nonchalance: lines like "does she mouth fuck you forever?" or "you're a flashback in a film reel on the one screen in my town" that punch far above their weight.
