Finally, after such a long time and so many records I have found a Crippled Black Phoenix project I actually enjoyed in full. Their brand of moody dwindling doom-ish post-metal never really appealed to me, but this time their song-writing went and picked itself the hell up. Laced with plenty more dynamic moments than most of their previous work combined, 'Ellengaest' is still not flawless, as most songs stretch out for unnecessary lengths adding not much to their cores.

Road hymns for the end of the world is immediately what comes to mind when I think of this release. In the year of 2020, nothing could be better; Ellengaest has served as the perfect backdrop for the stress, difficult situations, and heartbreak that has abounded this year. Their no genre rules approach to making music serves the thematic ideas of hardship and loss perfectly.

I kinda lost them in the 2010s. They made sure to come back in 2020 with a bang. An epic suite of post-rock, doom, and even Americana, Ellengaest masterfully make use of each of its vocalists to navigate between different atmosphere, from sombre tales to uplifting bangers.
