Razorblade Romance isn't a bad listen, just a disposable one. The songs are built on the foundation that death and love go hand-in-hand. The base material is also shallow and thin, leading to an unsatisfying finish.

Released just before the explosion of goth metal (or the the reason it ever happened), Razorblade Romance is everything a goth record needs to be: Brooding and dark without forgetting certain aspects of self-consciousness and humor, infectiously catchy and highly sexual. All this while the band shamelessly exploits Ville Valo's newfound sex symbol status and playing with a playfully homoerotic visual image. Not every band has the cojones to release a polished 80's revival album after their clichéd and overly serious debut.

Razorblade Romance is my favourite gothic rock album and one of 99' best releases. The best songs here are Poison Girl, Join Me In Death, Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart and Wicked Game (Chris Isaak cover).
