Why There Are Mountains is an indie masterpiece and it deserves every bit of praise it gets. From the amazing guitar playing, to the heartfelt lyrics this album has it all. The songs are epic, sprawling and some have the tendency to change their sound so much you'd think it's a different track completely. Cymbals Eat Guitars and I eat lots of pasta, both are very good things.

With Cymbals Eat Guitars debut release Why There Are Mountains lies raw passion and unnoticed brilliance. Every word and riff appears delicately planned as their unrefined indie rock, with a post rock edge, entices listeners repeatedly. Upon the first listen unravels their spontaneous, yet cohesive foundation. Every listen after is simply a bonus, whether it be dancing to the charming hit “Some Trees” or feeling that rush of euphoria sliver down your spine during “Wind Phoenix.” These guys know how to shred, and hardly show any form of inexperience. Gritty and soulful, Why There Are Mountains shouts a million-and-one reasons why Cymbals Eat Guitars should be playing right now; give it a spin and you too will know the reasons.

After hearing many rave about this on the site, I finally decided to give Cymbals Eat Guitars' Why There Are Mountains and within the first couple songs it was safe to say I was disappointed. Each song seemed like a mess, containing a Modest Mouse like weirdness with the dark, post rock edge of The Twilight Sad but just in the lamest way possible. Then came the powerful What Dogs See. Joseph D'Agostino raw passion and lyrical talent finally makes it way on the album without being bottled done by "noise." After being amazed by What Dogs See and the incredible closer Like Blood Does I decided to give this a couple more listens, and though I got a little more of a feel to it I still felt like the first half of the record of was just pretty much a mess, the second half shows great potential proving Why There Are Mountians to be a pretty excellent debut.

I personally prefer the other album cover to this, as it has more colour and joy to it. Cymbals Eat Guitars' debut album is one of few existing symbols of transition to 2010s, where internet self-promotion is to become the key player in musical success. Stylistically pulling from the indie scene of the bygone decade, but having enough wit in words, energy in play, and forward-thinking song-writing and sound to carry effortlessly over to the oncoming decades to come, an effect we are to an extent experiencing still.

There is something so undeniably sad in Why There Are Mountains, something brimming underneath the noise that every so often rears its ugly head and attempts to kill the band. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the only album Cymbals ever make as I'm not sure how much more emotional punishment they can invest in. Powerful.

With "...And the Hazy Sea," as the starting track, Cymbals Eat Guitars begin their career with one of the best indie rock songs of the past decade. Unfortunately, the hugely momentous and almost deflating song overshadows the rest of Why There Are Mountains to the point were the remaining tracks almost feel forced. Regardless, the album is still a solid debut.
