Wolfmother runs on a pretty tight formula. 23% Led Zeppelin. 52% Jet. 68% suck. (The Jet elements and the suck elements overlap a lot). This album is so painfully derivative that I'm upset that I had to listen to it. Not even pay for it as I reviewed it for my radio station, but plain old wish I hadn't even bothered to listen. They ravage the most boring elements of Led Zeppelin and combine them with the obnoxious elements of Jet and other modern rock revivals of the classic rock that wasn't all that great in the first place. Stay away from this album unless you are still mourning John Bonham's death. Even then, don't listen to more than one track.

I think that claims of unoriginality are somewaht unjustified. Wolfmother's influences are clear, but the song are greater than the sum of their parts. Other bands have been good but have never fully satisfied me as completely as this one. I find Led Zep too dull, Black Sabbath too messy and ill-advised, Muse too unorganic sounding (I know i sound petty now) and The White Stripes haven't written enough good songs, and in the space of a single album, Wolfmother has put them back in their places. My particular favourites are "Colossal" and the depressingly underrecognised Classic "Love Train". I'm sad to hear about The other two leaving Andrew Stockdale on his own halfway through the recording of a second album but apparently a new bassist and drummer are soon to be announced.

As a great fan (oh how I hate that word ;]) of Led Zeppelin I was nicely suprised that someone sounds more or less like them (bit less than more ;]). One friend of mine said that thay sound like they would sit in a nuclear shelter for about 30 years. And they do sound like that which is so amazing. But... after few litenings I got bored. There is nothing deep in that music. Nothing to discover. Nothing to explore. Nothing to love...

Just when I thought Austrailian dad-rock couldn't get any worse with Jet, these cocky dunces show up. The "classic" sound that they adapt-and, apparently, are attempting to revive-sounds forced and dated. Their lead singer tries way too hard to sound like Robert Plant (and he doesn't succeed all that much), and the band's music is pretty much basic, pilfered white-boy blues rock. Somebody needs to tell these guys that Zeppelin came and went already.

I really wanted to love this. What, after all, was to dislike about "Woman"? Derivative of Led Zep and Black Sab for sure, but it was also a fantastic rock song done absolutely without tongues in cheeks. For a second, Wolfmother were everything The Darkness should have been.
It's a false dawn. While there is a definite drive towards the 70s here - the organ swirls that appear all too often are pure pre-synth amateurism - the overall effect of this record is that it's a lost White Stripes album. And why would we need that when the original Stripes are still around? The singer's voice is even a clone of Jack White's at times.
That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, of course, if the songs were up to scratch, but the sad fact is that "Woman" is head and shoulders above everything else here. "Colassal" is the only other thing here that doesn't sound uninspired. "Apple Tree" is just abysmal (the nicest thing you could say about it is that it sounds like a White Blood Cells B-side), and the ballads fall completely flat, particularly in their hollow attempts to transform, "Stairway" style, into epic rockers halfway through. There's even reminders of similarly failed revivalists here - "Witchcraft" sounds like Ocean Color Scene, and some of the blundering rhythms elsewhere remind me of Jet. NOT COOL.

I found this album to be very cohesive. It's endless riffing and energy are able to keep you attentive most of the time. It contains a lot of interesting and enjoyable tracks beyond "Joker & The Thief" which was a surprise to me. Recommendations: "White Unicorn", "Woman", "Dimension", "Love Train"

The Zeppelin and Black Sabbath influences have been well documented, but Wolfmother still do a brilliant job of carrying it off. Borrowing the soaring guitar, mysticism and drug references of Zeppelin (there's a song called "White Unicorn", for God's sake) with the grooving rhythms of Sabbath and AC/DC, "Wolfmother" unleashes such gems as 'Joker and the Thief'(arguably the most popular Aussie modern rock song), the beautiful, shimmering tales of 'Colossal', 'White Unicorn', 'Where Eagles Have Been' and pocket rocket 'Woman'. Watch out for the Highland warcry riff on 'Tales From The Forest Of Gnomes' and the ramble on lift of 'Vagabond.' The only lowlights are the glam rock attempt 'Apple Tree' and 'Witchcraft', in which they take the old rock thing too far, pinch Deep Purple's 'Black Night' riff and then throw in a flute solo. Overall, a cracker of an album. And let's face it-Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever, so what's so bad about a band who sound like them?
