One of those records where all the individual parts and elements are really likeable but on the whole, while it is quite good at times, it doesn't bring you back to listen to a ton and doesn't possess that signature track or two. You get the epic Chelsea Wolfe howling cleans and some great screaming but the production on the whole leaves a bit to be desired as it just feels like there is cheap layer of fog over everything trying to add some mysterious mood to it all. 'Downers Surrounded by Uppers' really kicks things off nicely with tight riffs, anxious, noisy verses wedged between great energetic hooks by the Wolfe. A lot of potential but not quite as focused as it needs to be.

If you have never listened to Chelsea Wolfe (vocals and guitar) and/or Jess Gowrie (bass and drums) then you are in for some dark music. Chelsea hits you over the head with some of the darkest lyrics she has ever written, while you ate pounded with some heavy hitting drums. This album might be only 25 minutes in length, but they do what they need to and then they leave. The biggest flaw with the album is the production is sometimes so lo-fi and washed out that everything sounds so inaudible. This is nothing new for Chelsea, but man it sounds so annoying at times. Otherwise this is a really pleasant surprise and I really look forward to seeing if they do anything more together.

Short bursts of noisy sludgy punk led by tight and fierce drumming, Wolfe's ghostly voice and fucking riffz. It's short, it's gritty, it slaps.
