Wow. Was completely let down by The Tempest and (especially) River King, so I didnt expect much from this album. All those classic MS sounds are in there somewhere, there's a bit of each album mixed in. Would have liked to see some of the shorter tracks more fleshed out (Redemption Key in particular) and possibly a different track order (Through Vales of Blue fire should be first). I was happy to just get any Misery Signals at all, but after one listen, i'm even happier. Greatest metalcore band of all time.

'Through Vales Of Blue Fire' not opening Ultraviolet is a legitimate head scratcher and the criticism toward the length of the album is valid. Still, this is quality material from Misery Signals, and we're pretty fortunate these songs came together at all. 'Old Ghosts', 'Redemption Key' and 'Cascade Locks' are all incredible and every track demands an attentive ear. I'm normally one for albums erring on the shorter side as I think it promotes replayability, but I do agree an extra song on here would not go amiss.

I know I've heard these guys before, but only because I have all their other albums rated, not because I remember anything about them. Ultraviolet, for whatever reason, caught my attention though. Ultraviolet starts out as a fairly standard brutal, yet melodic, metalcore album but by the third track a bit more melody and some stronger songwriting starts to seep in. Is that enough to make my top 50? In 2020 it is. Besides, I've never minded standard metalcore as long as it's melodic and hooky.

With Jessie?s return, I was hoping for a ?Of Malice and the Magnum Heart? part 2. What we got is more of an ?Absent Light? part 2. Solid production, but not very memorable.

Unfortunately, this is contemporary Misery Signals. Monotonous vocals and uninspired fretwork cannot compensate for a stellar rhythm section and occasional spots of emotional outpouring. Misery Signals are at their best when they inject their music with feeling, and much of this record feels phoned in.
