Much darker than Dogrel, A Hero's Death is more about gloom than bloom, trading near-catchy punk bangers to meditative and deadpan post-punk. The record does suffer from a lack of variation, even though the best tracks indeed are beaut (t/t, opener, "Televised Dream").

Fontaines' approach to song-writing on 'A Hero's Death' is to delve deeper into building repetition. Not something unfamiliar to the band and certainly a staple of post-punk in general. But for some reason, they decided to plague every single song with it. It's not that the album is unremarkable or repetitive to a point of being unlistenable. It's just that some low-effort aftertaste lingers on after listening.

A bit of a step back from 'Dogrel' as the track to track variation isn't as great here, the atmosphere is down and melancholy for much of the record and the last 10 minutes of the record kind of fizzles out. That being said the first seven tracks are all pretty great individually but this album just doesn't congeal as well as their last one which had amazing pacing and more varied moods. Still easily worth a few spins from any post punk fan and just a minor step down from what they are capable of. Just doesn't feel fully fleshed out or realized. The opening track, title track, 'I Don't Belong' and 'Oh Such a Spring' are very nice.
