2.5 average | Blud Vidal | July 27th 20 | Okay folks, I must draw the line here. There are some superb, beautiful, positively chilling moments on this record. Pd'H excel at their craft - there's no doubt they can whisk the listener to an Arctic place filled with shimmering dark chords and ambience. But like...it's two hours. And they play approximately 3 notes per song.

3.5 great | Bedex | July 7th 20 | On first listen I'm not really convinced by this. Now yes this is July so perhaps another day I'd have liked it better. Also I can't fairly compare it to prior PdH albums bcs it's been a while. But this felt a lot like riff A for 10min, interlude, riff B for 10min, interlude, rinse and repeat, which on a 40min record is all good and well, but over 2hrs just tired me out. The tracks feel like the PdH formula applied to the T - well executed, but formulaic. The prod is nice and lo-fi, but I perhaps would have preferred something more abrasive to reinforce the RIFFZ. Now I say this but by track 13 my ears really were suffering. It was fine after I paused to take a wee though so maybe I'm just a noob. Now this does have great tracks - 1,4,6 - perhaps my fave here,8 and dat violin, and 13 after min 7 when I took the aforementioned wee. The latter feels like slowly dying in the cold and I really dig how it concludes the album by slowly, well, dying out. Bumped the album a point, but sadly it had previously been dragged down a fair few points because I found 9-12 (and even the beginnign of 13) to be quite fillerish, boring and lacking definition (need to relisten I was maybe just fatigued by then), even borderline insufferable in places. The intro to 13 is very good and nice to the ear which was welcome. 2 was a sign of what was to come, it already felt like the formula merely applied and far less striking than 1. 3.7

4.5 superb | Gary STAFF | June 27th 20 | The best Paysage d'Hiver after Schattengang. This is a lengthy, a bleak and icy atmospheric riff blizzard accompanied by the typical dark ambient elements we all know and like. 'Im Wald' requires some patience, but still a very enjoyable musical experience. The aesthetics and the atmosphere are both satisfying, BUT: there are not enough lo-fi wind noises!

4.3 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | June 26th 20 | Why did he officially release that in June? It's hard to vibe to this when the sun's up at 5AM and it's so hot you could cook bacon on your belly. With that being said, Wintherrr is one glacial motherfucker and doesn't give the single fuck which time of the year it is: when he riffz, you shut up, close your eyes, and penetrate the cold pine forest. There are as many nature recordings as expected in a PdH record, reinforcing the Swiss' potent capability to drag the listener into the iciest tree fortresses. So, what makes Im Wald distinguishable from past output is the rebalancing of the riff/drone duality: while previous records didn't hesitate to border on dark ambient, riffz are here the prominent force in the mix, resulting in one of the crispest and dynamic recordings in the one-man-band discography. Supported by drums - whose sole job is to stay in the background and hammer the shit out of the snare - and the classic shrieks, these riffs are best enveloped when well-known Casio synths come into the equation. Then, Wintherrr creates the unthinkable: a violin enters the album's course in "Le reve lucide", neither completely atonal nor entirely pleasing to the ear. This thin thread between the musically unlistenable and the emotionally moving is at the core of Paysage d'Hiver's aesthetic. This project is a living testimony of all things disgusting, from the horrendous production to the sloppy playing to the inhumane cries. It's all about atmosphere and aesthetics apparently? Yes, it is, and it's fucking good.

4.0 excellent | blackmetalhipster | October 25th 20 | While this is another great Paysage d'hiver Release with amazing atmosphere I don't think this really justifies running 2 hours. There is not muuch that is new to Wintherrs Formular here (expect for putting the Ambient tracks in between songs as a sort of Bridge which works muuch better then just putting a 20 min ambient track somewhere on the record so that is good). Overall this is solid, but nothing special and overly stretched

2.5 average | ChoccyPhilly | July 16th 20 | This does NOT justify its 2 hours. Decent-ish atmosphere but has nearly 0 variation and doesn't do anything interesting across its length. The great thing about BM is how forward thinking and
varied it can be whilst incorporating huge atmospheres at blistering pace. This does the bare minimum and stretches it out far beyond its welcome.
If this is the new gold standard in BM, then BM has regressed.
