5.0 classic | ShadowNeko | May 31st 20 | You obviously just rated it a 1 out of spiteful ignorance towards an extremely talented band.
Nobody cares about you being petty.

5.0 classic | Dakota West Foss STAFF | June 17th 20 | Damn that 1 is cringe lol why would you rate something just to counter what other people are doing. Yikes, my dude

4.0 excellent | kalkwiese | May 22nd 20 | So, listened to this a fair bit. Messiah Complex overshadows the other songs. Carousel and Invasion can compete and that's most of the album's runtime. The other songs are fine. I feel like this deserves a 4.0, because of the excellent songs, but a 3.5 would make sense as well

3.5 great | j1myz | July 25th 20 | Great riffs. Great production. Overwhelmingly dense and could do with being more spaced
out and more dynamic.
What disappoints me is that Haken seems to be finding it harder to recapture the catchy
melodies of Visions/Mountain era - as great as some of the material sounds when I listen
to it, I'm hard-pressed to remember what it sounded like afterwards.

2.5 average | RichRamp | July 26th 20 | Honestly the singing is awful, lyrics unoriginal and not very appealing which is weird in a concept album like this. Only redeeming parts are the 2 singles and the Instrumentals are consistently good throughout.

3.0 good | Mythodea | August 4th 20 | What if the Cockroach King was actually a real cockroach-human crossover? Haken explore this idea
in a two album span, starting from Vector and ending (probably) with Virus. In this thriller
story, we find Haken on their most heavy, with rhythms coming to the forefront. The sound the
opted for is more modern, less melodic and definitely reflects the refined production of the genre
in 2020. Unfortunately, this side of Haken, albeit enjoyable and entertaining, doesn't add up to
something greater than the sum of its parts. Virus doesn't really stand on its own. I don't have
any problem with this face of Haken, but honestly, it pales in comparison to their versatility on
previous albums, like The Mountain and Affinity. Check out: Canary Yellow, Invasion, Messiah
Complex.

3.7 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | I guess the transformation is complete. There's basically no more traditional prog left in these guys. They've fully embraced a modern djenty sound that is rhythmic and chaotic. The only real remnant of their past is their vocalist (which is the element most people seem to be complaining about). They've stopped focusing on strong songwriting, and more on style and aggression. I, for one, like it. So, it's not nearly as memorable as their older stuff but musically it's intense, semi-unique, and just catchy enough that the album doesn't just end in an unremarkable blur.

0.0 | Blud Vidal | August 4th 20 | There's no joking around here: Haken have not disappointed with their latest release. This record is a tightly controlled, thematically coherent, aurally cohesive work that should cement Haken's place as one of the titans of modern progressive metal. To shave back the hyperbole a little bit, I do find that, despite its general cogent nature, Virus succeeds in part because of its standout tracks. While the LP flows fairly seamlessly and no track comes by surprise, I find myself impressed just as much by sparse moments of calculated energy as I do by the album's natural flow. What this means is Virus lacks some of the emotional narrative punch present on The Mountain, and that's what holds it back from true greatness in the end.

4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | July 28th 20 | On the companion album to their 2018 Vector, Virus shows that the UK band not only knows exactly what they are doing with progressive music, but how to seamlessly make two concept albums in a two year period. From the opening track you know exactly what you are in for and it comes as no surprise that the album is filled with amazing guitar playing, memorable bridges, great changes of pace, and some very interesting experimentations thrown in on some of the melodic interludes. In general, it?s a bit better than the last album with a lot more memorable songwriting. My only complaint is that the closer is a huge change of pace then the rest of the album which throws me off every time it comes on.

3.5 great | YRI | July 24th 20 | At a first listen, this is amazing. However, I don't understand why they'd split Messiah Complex into five different parts. The song seems so much more connected than e.g. Concealing Fate (TesseracT) or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Dream Theater), that I don't get the reason to split up a song that would be just 17 minutes long in its full length. Rating as of writing this comment: 4/5

4.0 excellent | GamamJ | July 20th 20 | My AotY, and a ridiculously good album by Haken. Somewhat of a recap of everything they have done, with the direct Cockroach King reference in Messiah Complex being a highlight for sure. There is melody, anthemic choruses, lots of djenty chugging, great Petrucci-like prog-metal riffs and of course tons of wank.

4.5 superb | prnzokoshiro | June 30th 20 | I'm a person who can put themselves in many a shoe, hence my overly positive ratings - I often feel I 'get' what the band/artist is goin for... perhaps music is to be enjoyed, not picked apart for idiosyncratic reasons or not gettin laid with the album in question playing in the background... now, if this shit were like Witchcraft's POS release this year (IMO), where the motives seem very much questionable... that's when I click on the toilet ratings... or when there's too many nagging ill-written or poorly executed aspects pertaining to it... it's all subjective, of course, music is often not visual entertainment that can be more easily grasped, in relative comparison - this abstract nature can make for pickiness on mere whim... or a connection where it clicks into sync with whatever page you're on, or how much willingness you have to be sort of a masochist in the quest for understanding olfactory info from anyone musician's perspective - ok I'm babble-rambling, I hope this message is not perceived as dense or ignorant due to not CYA-ing or other such semantical bullshit
