| 5.0 classic | Khu | May 11th 20 | Paradise Lost have done it again! They've
managed to craft an album with the feeling
and spirit that have guided them
throughout their career, yet comes to a
brilliant culmination. This is a classic
for the new decade that stands tall with
the giants that were Icon and Gothic.
This is why Paradise Lost are one the
greatest bands of all time. Every track is
unskippable, and I relish the incoming
debates from fans trying to pick a
favorite song. Never has an album more
deserved 5 stars than this

| 4.5 superb | cloakanddagger | May 14th 20 | Medusa was great but I'm glad Paradise Lost have branched out here, the sound they were going for was starting to go stale so adding some new tricks to the book definitely paid off in the right way.

| 3.0 good | Chino smoking it up! | May 19th 20 | The album/ songs are very well done, but as predictable as flawless in the end...something on these guys turn me off, still a nice listen and a step ahead from Medusa. I specially dug the last third. For me personally there's something very hard rock in the songwriting that drags me down...again personally, I much more enjoy the latest Katatonia, or last year's Swallow the Sun..

| 3.6 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | May 18th 20 | It's been a long time since I last really enjoyed a Paradise Lost album. That guitar tone mmmmh. Overall the sound displayed here is riffy as hell. Once again with them tho, I feel they could sometimes cut some tracks and make leaner albums. It's v consistent, although a tad monotonous soundwise.

| 3.5 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | I wasn't a fan of Medusa and its two-dimensional back-to-roots sound. Even classics like Icon and Draconian Times had more diversity than that album did. It seemed like Obsidian was going to be an album that went in a similar back-to-roots direction, and it has, but they've managed to bring back a little bit of diversity of sound. There are a lot more melodic elements and clean singing on this release, and the overall songwriting seems to have improved drastically, as well. I don't know what happened between Medusa and here, but the changes were definitely for the better.

| 3.5 great | svinariezas | November 5th 21 | A pretty nice gothic metal album with a few doom moments and a fully doom metal opus 'Ravenghast' (best song on the album by far). Not a big fan of the production. Low end sounds amazing (the bass has the best tone in the whole Paradise Lost discography), but drums are overcompressed and the whole sound is a bit unnatural. No headroom at all. I think all the albums from 'In Requiem' are really good and 'Obsidian' is no exception.

| 4.0 excellent | Assemblage | October 3rd 21 | Even with the bonus tracks, this felt like an incredibly fast 56 minute listen. That's usually a strength- as is the case here. Can't say I heard more than two albums by Paradise Lost thus far, and it seems like I may be missing a larger part of their nuance in respect to their vast discography, but I feel like this could work as a good introduction to the band. I will certainly look into some more after some additional listens to this.

| 3.5 great | MaidenUFO | July 9th 21 | Although Paradise Lost is one of my favorite bands for years, their turn to death-doom style wasn't my kind of stuff I like. In this album they blend all the styles and they create an interesting album in the familiar sounds and guitar melodies that made them the pioners of gothic sound. "Ending days" is by far my favorite song on the record.

| 4.0 excellent | maninthebox | December 18th 20 | Dark and emotive, Paradise Lost have crafted the perfect album for a dreary winter evening. They also finally balanced out their rival sounds of death doom and British goth music perfectly. Some of their best songs of their modern era are on this release. r

| 4.0 excellent | manosg EMERITUS | October 27th 20 | After Medusa, I was almost sure that Paradise Lost would move towards a different direction, but I was uncertain of the specific direction. I love how they decided to put out some more melodic material which brings to mind their glory days.

| 0.0 | Your own inadequacies have twisted your mind into a pretzel that needs a bit of salt. | June 6th 20 | I'm ashamed to say that, of all metal genres, both that are most commonly used to categorize Paradise Lost tend to escape my interest. I may lose some cred here, but doom and gothic metal bore me for their lack of pulse (strong IMO here). Obsidian, however, brings a whole lot more to the table than atmosphere or sludgy chug. It stays true to its doom/goth progenitors' tropes, but for some reason the moody despair in this record actually speaks to me. That's def worth a 4.
