Their most patient record? It does take a while to fully reveal itself. I'd say the post-punk bangers are less bombastic than on Relatives on Descent, and overall it's much less noisy than their precedent outputs. It's not totally absent though, cuts like "Tranquilizer" make sure to bring noise rock into the post-punk. The most interesting additions - jarring sax, female vocals - are welcome for sure but it doesn't really compensate (for me) the lack of memorable guitar lines. Still, this is extremely tight work, second only to their 2017 record.

Unfortunately this does not feel like up to the usual band's standard to me. The exception here for sure is the tear inducing closer, but many other tracks leave me wanting more.

Noisy post punk with a dark and dreary atmosphere with some excellent cameos from less traditional instruments for the genre. First and foremost are the vocals, which seem to get a lot of attention when reading around through reviews and comments. The vocals aren't the most standout for the genre but their monotonous and impassive delivery do serve to add to the feeling of dread and hopelessness you get out of the music on the whole. The guitars really drive Protomartyr with a nice mix of leads and chord progressions as well as some nice dissonance to match the noisy tones. The sax and clarinet were a surprise and luckily they were added in with great taste. They serve as an enhancement to the guitars rather than the stars of the tracks they are used in and they really match the ominous atmosphere here quite well. 'Processed by the Boys', 'June 21', 'Michigan Hammers' and 'Worm in Heaven' are all super memorable tracks that show this band does not lack songwriting talent.

I would abstain from immediately trying to rank this within band's discography, but for what it's worth 'Ultimate Success Today' is their most mature album yet. Mature of course meaning their most emotionally jaded and opinionally exhausted. Lyrics display a state even more tired, confused and amid giving up, but the despondency in songwriting show growth. Just how much does some vibrant sax add to their mix, oh my. I wish it were utilised more. Songs either strike gold right away or patiently brew in your mind, growing their wicked roots deeper into your memory, contaminating you with a Twisted perspective of what is rock.
