So, I may be one of the few who believe this, but I must say that Searching for a Former Clarity is by far Against ME!'s best album. A loose concept album based on a fictional version of this very band compromising their music for monetary gain, Gabel is at his peak lyrically. From the blunt and political ("From Her Lips to Gods Ears") to the painstakingly metaphorical (the title track), the album is absolutely a work of art lyrically. Musically, this is the new London Calling. Mixing multiple genres and taking extremely varied influences to create a veritable musical buffet which never enters into the territory of repetition. Its an excellent album and in 10 years will be recognized for being a revolutionary album

Any day I'm listening to Against Me! is a good day. "Miami", "How Low" and "Unprotected Sex With Multiple Partners" are, in my unpopular opinion, an improvement from As The Eternal Cowboy, and it's the AM! you know and love. The self-titled track that ends the album also is an incisive look into where Laura's head was when she wrote it, and I continue to find her an inspiring figure, and one of the great punk rockers of our time. There's not many who'd call this their best album, but it's still a great release by the band so many of us know and love.

As someone who prefers mid-era Against Me! the most, I consider Searching for a Former Clarity to be their best work, but not their defining one (That would still go to RAR). I think this was supposed to be a concept album, revolving around a band "selling out", but seems like that concept went over many fans heads. It's not too hard to see why, as the songs are more structured, production is cleaner and the hooks are bigger and more apparent than ever before. At the same time, it seems like a natural progression for the band, and the result was their best collection of songs. There is a new level of depth to these tracks, and Laura's voice is a powerful as ever, lyrics bitter and cynical as ever. The beats sound generic at first, but they are very well played in my opinion, and almost ever song has memorable lyrics and hooks. I love the direction they went with this record, everything just seems to flow together perfectly. A classic protest the music industry record.

Some tracks are great (like Unprotected Sex with Multiple Partners), others are decent (Problems), some are somewhat boring (Pretty Girls) and some are interesting departures for Against Me! (like the ballad Violence). Though I found some of these tracks (like Miami) less accessible than the Crime As Forgiven By EP, I'm happy to report that this LP grew on me.

Even though it's quite the overrated album, Searching For A Former Clarity is folk-punk done right. And done right in the folk-punk world means creating catchy tunes with thrashy guitars. Against Me! do that, and nothing more. The album takes some time to grow on the listener, and then slowly grows away after each listen. The most upsetting thing here is the promise that every song shows at the beginning turning into another dull pop-by-numbers tune. Hopefully they find a way to channel the energy of the intros into the whole songs on their next album.
