I am still largely lost on Yves Tumor's appeal, but I do get that some seeds of crativity are there and are powerful enough to keep them in the radar. But then again, I just cannot take a whole full-length of these undercooked messy songs.

God damn, "Gospel for a New Century" absolutely bangs. Mega shame that kind of energy almost never happens again during the rest of the record. Some tracks try to, but ultimately fail. Most of the tracks indeed fall into the "slick but eh" category, the production attempting to hide some songwriting issues. When it bangs - and that means "when it fucking rocks" - like on said opener or "Kerosene!", it's an absolute delight. The rest is pretty but at times yawn-inducing faux psych rock.

This year made us wanna escape and the one album to make us do that is this one. It's also responsible for giving us the best banger of 2020, in Kerosene.

Not a whole lot to say here. Both the music and backup vocalists outshine Yves' vocal performances in many instances. He just kind of talks along a lot and sounds bored while in the backdrop you have some pretty intense music. Contrast like this can work in music but here it often doesn't. Kerosene! and Dream Palette are really great songs because of the instrumental and backup vocalist performances more than Yves. The opening track is also quite nice but outside of those there isn't a whole lot to look back on and get hooked on and the production leaves too much blurriness and a vocal dominated mix. Three pretty stellar tracks but on the whole not an essential listen.

Although it doesn't have the variety and excentricities of Safe in the Hands of Love, I think it compensates by doing a beaten-to-death-pop-formula with justice, style, and most of all, personality.

Another solid release from the Florida electronic producer. Although it?s a much different album than his previous works, in that now he is producing a modern soul record. In the past, you would expect to hear some experimental sound collage with some eerie and provoking vocals. However, now we are seeing a stripped back and but more concise and focused soul record. In the past, many of his records were stylistically all over the place and nothing really came together well, but now we are seeing a more direct, mature, and focused sound from him. My biggest gripes with this project are sometimes the instrumentals can wash out his vocals to the point where everything is colliding oddly. Also, sometimes I wish he would explore more with some of the tracks, in that many of them end without much build or presence. Lastly, he still has the problem of trying too many things in a small amount of space. Especially with some of the shorter tracks or interludes, sounds and textures sort of happen, but then end and the direction changes. But, otherwise I?m pretty happy with this direction and look forward to seeing what he does next with it.
