By far the most consistent record Thursday has done since War All The Time. Common Existence is a focused, aggressive record that more or less erases the doubts anyone had following their last lukewarm effort. The screamo-meets-Envy sound attempted on the Thursday/Envy Split is now perfected and pays off in spades. Although there are still a few minor production flaws, songs like "As He Climbed The Dark Mountain", "You Were The Cancer", "Friends In The Armed Forces", and "Unintended Long Term Effects" show why Thursday is and always will be a head above their post-hardcore brethren. Now go tell Daryl to finsh the f*cking Glassjaw record, Geoff.

This album goes above and beyond all expectations for die-hard Thursday fans. The album was recorded using an analog system and it shows especially through the terrific bass response most notably on Last Call. I think that if A City By the Light Divided was recorded analog, it would have made that record sound a whole lot better.
From purely a sonic and technical perspective, the album's production(Fridmann) and engineering are miles and miles beyond Thursday's last effort. On the songwriting side of things, everything and everyone is operating at full tilt. The chord progressions, guitar riffs, basslines, vocal melodies, lyrics and most notably drums are some of the best work Thursday has done to date.
Personally I feel its better than my favorite Thursday album in War All the Time, but I would venture to say that if you actually take the time to listen to it and are more partial to Full Collapse, you'll find this album to be better than that as well. It seems like the most cohesive, interesting, and agressive Thursday record to date, hence my 5.0 and classic rating. Thursday continues to push the post-hardcore genre in a time where I thought everything that could be done with it, had been. Glad to see I've been proven wrong.

Everyone I know seems to agree: Easily the best Thursday record. Nostalgia aside, play it back to back with any of the other records and it shines. Best production, best songs and interesting lyrics make this a big win. Favs: Time's Arrow, Circuits of Fever, Dark Mountain.

When this album is on it's the most mature and overall excellent stuff they've made (Last Call, As He Climbed the Dark Mountain, You Were the Cancer). Slightly progressive in nature and highly "experimental" when it comes to their sound, Common Existence doesn't fail at its attempts to evolve the band, for better or worse. However, most of the songs don't work well, as the acoustic/ambient droning of "Time's Arrow" or the attempt at making another At this Velocity in "Unintended Long Term Effects" prove. Another hit or miss Thursday record, Common Existence is undeniably their weakest overall effort yet, and its time for even the hardcore of Thursday fans to start questioning the amount of juice the band really has left.

This is based on my first impression of the album. It's strong, the song writing reached a level of confidence i've never heard from them in a long long time. I've been disappointed with War All The Time, and felt A City By The Light Divided was weak at many points, but they turned around and gave us a good record.
It's no Full Collapse, but i know those days are over.

Absolutely groundbreaking, although the first time I heard it through, it was a bit difficult.. It has a dark, melancholic feeling throughout the album that just lingers around hauntingly thereafter. Definitely their best album to date, they totally reinvented themselves from "A City by the Light Divided".
You need this album. I'm buying it twice as I believe in it that much.

Such a great album. It is definitely Thursday being Thursday. The production on it is great and musically I think you can definitely tell the guys have improved, especially on the drums. Tucker outdid himself on this one. Each song has its own individuality but the album as a whole is still cohesive. "Last Call" blows my mind as does "Cancer".
This album is definitely making a strong case as my favorite Thursday album. Thats right, I may like it more than Full Collapse. Basically this is an amazing album that I haven't stopped listening to yet. Definitely a must pick up album of 2009.

the synth is back, although not a prominent as it was on "City", which is a good thing. what is also back though, is the obnoxious echoey vocal recording, which i don't think does justice to Geoff's excellent voice. The snare drum... I don't know, sounds hollow. it just stands out too much.
At any rate, it's a solid release but many fans will likely be pining for the days of full collapse when they hear this one.

So John Hanson was right about this being Thursday's most mature effort yet, and generally I'm one for more "charismatic" and unpredictable releases if I have the choice between that and more "well thought out" and calculated compositions. However Thursday have made one of their most grandiose releases yet, perhaps their best yet.

I've just recently gotten into Thursday and this album is quite impressive. Full Collapse, however, i felt was a more consistent record. In regards to the post hardcore genre, i'm unable to see how this is. Nonetheless, this is a strong album that shouldn't be missed.

Great album, one of those rare ones where the second half surpases the first by orders of magnitude. The first half is still good, mainly due to the two openers, but overall it has nothing on 'You Were the Cancer' 'Time's Arrows' or 'Love Has Led Us Astray'.
