There is absolutely no doubt that this is some of the best-orchestrated and most moving sound recorded in a hell of a long time. Hymn To The Immortal Wind has a timeless aura about it, as if it could quite easily have been produced hundreds of years ago in wastelands and castle courtyards. It's the kind of music everybody wants playing when they finally get to see the northern lights or the pyramids or Paris at night: painfully optimistic, absolutely awe-inspiring and quite simply sublime.

If You Are There didn't convince you that Mono deserve a spot among post rock's upper echelon, Hymn to the Immortal Wind certainly will. In pretty much the pulverizing record released so far in 2009, Mono deliver seven gorgeously orchestrated gems bookended by the two best songs of their career, "Ashes in the Snow" and "Everlasting Light." It's sometimes dragged out by the sheer hugeness of it all, but Hymn To the Immortal Wind consistently amazes with beauty and heaviness while staying on the good side of pretentious.

listening to this right now and im really enjoying how much it sounds like all post rock ever. this band has really got the whole boring long songs thing nailed down. oh snapsiez was that a piano i just heard?! kudos

While this album is not quite a classic, it is definitely one of the most enjoyable orchestrated listens from start to finish. Ashes in the Snow towering over the rest of the songs makes it hard for me to give this a five, but that's not to say all the other songs aren't 4-5s, because they are. Rating this a 1 is an absolute crime.

ok ok ok ok ok. first: learn everything you can about post rock. got that? ok cool. now forget everything about post rock that keeps it from becoming stale contrived bullshit. cool cool. can you do guitar tremolos? remember the tried and true softsoftsoftLOUD? I KNOW!!!! Oh fuck I'm good. How about you include an orchestra and bells so people will go "Oh fuck an orchestra and bells!". Awesomesauce. Now write a post rock album. Well done Mono, I think we have a winner on our hands.

I truly believe mono are out of the post-rock range. This shit is classical and classic it is. Who can forget the marching drums, the epic crescendos, the walls of noise? Oh, wait. That sounds like post-rock. But take my word for it. This shit is tight.
cons: a bit of variety would be nice, can be occasionaly tedious(occasionaly), and do all the songs really need to be equally epic? For if all is epic, none is epic. Not that it isn't epic. It's epic. But not too epic. Epic enough to be nicely epic. Epic.

A unique journey that tells a story without words. Bittersweet, some songs seem to blossom with fresh new youth while others sound like they are drawing their last breath. Very passionate music.

Enchanting, pure, innocent, and deeply heartfelt, "Hymn To The Immortal Wind" (which is
arguably the most remarkable album title I've ever heard) moment-to-moment breathes with
a near incomparable life. Like most Post-Rock, the indulgence and turgid composition
that typifies the genre is present ("Burial At Sea" is less than spectacular, largely
due to this) however, on the whole, the quality maintained throughout is simply
exceptional. More than mere consistency and impressive heights, "Hymn To The Immortal
Wind" possesses those elusive x-factors that an artist can spend a career chasing
after: character, sincerity, and soul.
With the swelling peaks of "Ashes In The Snow", the reflective beauty of "Silent Flight,
Sleeping Dawn", the innocent tenderness of "Pure As Snow", the rousing homecoming of
"Follow The Map", and the striking resonance of the opening chords of "Everlasting
Light", the subtle magic of this experience is simply a treasure.
If ever You find Yourself struggling to persevere, to find that lofty glimmer of hope in
the most pressing moments of our lives, I urge You: make this experience a part of You.

This is premium napping music. I just woke up from a 11 minute power nap after listening to Ashes in Snow before a show came on.
Could someone please tell me the fascination with this, because I've tried, and tried again by listening to the "epic" Ashes in Snow and it made: sleep, and make me wonder why this had such a high rating. This is really bad.
I'm sick of trying.

The album that sparked my love for MONO. Each track is well-composed, and the song transitions
(particularly between "Burial At Sea" and "Silent Flight, Sleeping Dawn") are lovely. "Ashes in the Snow" and
"Everlasting Light" deserve the praise they get, while "Silent Flight, Sleeping Dawn" and "The Battle To
Heaven" are the underrated classics on "Hymn to the Immortal Wind".

I wouldn't call this album boring, but it is very homogeneous. The melodies are pretty beautiful and often remind me of soundtracks from Hayao Miyazaki films. They keep it interesting enough, and it's quite focused and tight for a post rock album. Maybe even to a fault. Otherwise, very enjoyable and I will likely return to it.

It moves sequentially from chord to chord to chord (repeat) and, to me, although a grand spectacle it doesn't save it from being a little bit boring. Then again this is a band called Mono so I can't really complain when it turns that it isn't diverse enough for me.
