| 4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | May 28th 20 | On 2012-2017 A.A.L dropped a collection of catchy, dance-able House tracks that utilized samples masterfully. In this more recent collection A.A.L makes an impressive shift from the groovy House songs to more abrasive tracks driven by intricate textural production, wonderful songwriting and hypnotic beats that suck you into a vacuum with just you and the music. By random circumstance it is pretty eye opening to listen to this in the same day as Squarepusher's newest LP and while the records are in a similar alcove of the music world they almost couldn't be more different. A.A.L's songs slowly develop adding small musical and rhythmic nuances bar by bar until they inevitably reach an epic climax without any need for flashy glitz and glamour. A.A.L feels like the chef cooking a simple 4-dish ingredient getting the most out of each thing in his arsenal whereas Squarepusher feels like the person making a 30 ingredient stew where everything melds together and loses its uniqueness. The textures alone on this album make it great but A.A.L's attention to detail and ability to make each element in his music feel extremely important combined with great songwriting push this over the top.

| 4.0 excellent | SalteyBacon | February 13th 20 | This album kicks the sophomore slump's ass so hard that Aphex Twin heard it. This exploration of sound is so refreshing to hear. A.A.L. 2019-2020 next year?

| 3.5 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | February 11th 20 | 2012-2017 was the upbeat, funky and boastful side of a night out, and now 2017-2019 underlies said night's darker and more mechanical/industrial tones. If Jaar was first known for his microhouse endeavours, AAL was a way for him to make peepz dance to his groovy tunes. On this new compilation, he finally brings his two worlds together, and offers dancy yet futuristic and mechanical bangers. And while the previous compilation was presented to us as, well, a compilation full of singles and no real connection between the tracks, the way this album is constructed feels much more deliberate. Each track complements the precedent and helps build up the next one. A perfect bridge between Jaar's first microhouse love and his AAL deep house culture.

| 3.5 great | SinNanna | December 2nd 20 | Less soulful and deep-house influenced than the debut, leaning more towards a minimalistic, colder and more industrial aesthetic instead. The first two tracks might give the impression that 2017-2019 is a continuation of the warmer, more welcoming sounds we've come to know from the Against All Logic project with their catchy and accessible vocal samples, but later tracks like With An Addict and Alarm make abundantly clear that Nicolas Jaar is in a different artistic headspace this time around. 2017-2019's sound palette is emphasized with metallic samples, minimal grooves and a dronier ambience, not too unlike the sounds you might hear on an Autechre record, only less mechanical and more accessible and dancefloor oriented. Despite my comparison to the previous record, the music on 2017-2019 still holds a certain identity that feels like a logical sonic progression from the debut, thanks in part to some of the more lighter and more uplifting elements that get introduced later in the tracklist on the song Penny and the fragmented vocal samples on You (Forever). I don't like this record quite as much as the debut, but I still think this is another great addition to the Against All Logic canon.
