On their third album Suffocation once again helped to pioneer the now thriving technical death metal and Slam Death Metal Sub-genres. So its easy to say that Pierced From Within is a classic not only in the Death Metal genre itself but in Metal as a whole and should definitely be required listening to any respectable metal head. The music itself is dark, brooding, and really fucking heavy. The murky production on this release helps to spotlight occasional huge mammoth sized riffs that every now and then appear out of the wave of nonstop technicality just look at the song Suspended in Tribulation. And as far as guitar solos go, Terrance Hobs creates some of the best and even most melodic guitar solos you'll ever hear on this album. If there is one criticism the album is kind of front loaded and the best songs make their appearance all at the beginning. Other than that though this is a masterpiece. Best songs: Thrones of Blood, Depths of Depravity, and Suspended in Tribulation.

As heavy as their earlier woks but a bit clearer in its execution and more complex in its song structures. Every song here is an epic, with countless great riffs, transitions and the best death metal breakdowns. Period. This is the pinnacle of Suffocation's brand of death metal.

On Pierced From Within, Suffocation managed to compose more complex songs while still retaining the brutality and quality of the two previous albums. That combined with superb performances from each member and killer production, the album is nothing short of essential... Go get it NOW, goddammit.

This is a generous 4.0 for me as I nearly gave 3.5. Suffocation's strongest element on this album is their creative rhythms that are complex yet groovy. The frequent use of rests simultaneously between all instruments makes the chugging hit so much harder. All of this is made possible by the insane talent of drummer Doug Bohn who in my opinion carries this whole experience. The riffs on this thing are hit or miss. I suspect this is partially due to the production hindering the note clarity which is a frequent issue I find in brutal death metal. This is also a result of the strictly chromatic melodies they use which I don't find to be terribly memorable most of the time. Some riffs even sound as if they are just patterns of random notes. Despite this, the guitars are still more than serviceable, especially when talking about the leads. Frank Mullens vocals show a variety of guttural techniques which I found to be very pleasing alongside the instrumentation.

Well, where can you really start with Pierced From Within? It's a technical marvel, and its reputation proceeds it. The songs are relentlessly heavy in a way that mass graves cant fuck with, and the vocals are like Satan on a diet of 1960s gravel and 1990s kush. A work of genius.

Holy mother...this album is one dirty motherfucker. Now that I finally "get" at what they're trying to convey, I love this band. If you're looking for another Cannibal Corpse rundown, then look elsewhere - this album is challenging, bleak, and pretty damn weird for death metal. It's hardly straightforward at times and flows at a very lopsided and disjointed pace. Regardless, it's still an amazing record and I still think that 'Suspended into Tribulation' (especially the ridiculous outro) is one of the greatest death metal songs the band had ever recorded.

As good and spectacular as its three predecessors. It remembers very much the sound adopted in "Effigy of the Forgotten", but evolves in consistency and does not leave the intensity by side until the last second. The beginning of Suffocation's career is a huge feat for Death Metal.

Were it not for a couple of unnecessary re-hashes of songs, Pierced From Within might have been Suffocation's finest hour. The original material found on this LP contain some of brutal death and technical death metal's greatest moments, with each song being a carefully crafted, hateful explosion of downright nefarious riffs, spidery bass, obliterating slams, dastardly vocals, and one of the better drum performances in metal as a whole. The songwriting is on par with Breeding The Spawn, meaning that it's insatiably fun to listen to, and the production job is only a shade below Effigy Of The Forgotten, retaining some of the vileness while also adding a dash of clarity. It feels like being dragged through a volcanic wasteland by some abhorrent beast while lighting and thunder endlessly strike and boom on the bleak red horizon. Is it better than its predecessors? Again, without the remakes of previously released songs that unfortunately don't add anything to them, it would've not only been better than both of their previous LP's, but better than nearly all of the metal in this style.
