Lots of familiar melodies and sounds, but still something new and exciting. The new (and probably last) Burzum album combined every strength of all the dungeon synth / ambient releases, making it one of Varg's strongest ambient outputs. A lengthy, but highly atmospheric release, which mostly builds on old-school synths and folk instruments. Fortunately this is lot more similar to ...Yore than Sol austan.... I wish songs like "The Sacred Well", "Gathering Herbs", "The Ettin Stone Heart", etc. would be longer...

A few tracks really succeed at some sort of warm folkish vibe that?s surprisingly atmospheric and relaxing. Some songs are meh, but it?s an interesting little release that is a good send off for old varg.

Varg leaves us with one last dungeon synth Burzum record. While the atmosphere is immersive, individually the cuts here are not the best the church burner ever granted us with. Still, over the course of an hour and a half of music, he manages to keep the listener engaged in his mysterious and ritualistic blend of traditional Northern European folk and ambient. This is not the most essential record of the year, but it's one of the most surprisingly enjoyable one for sure, especially given its "demo" roots. It's the final Burzum record, made of a bunch of tracks recorded here and there. It might not be the epic conclusion we all wanted (that dream was abandoned when Varg became the Euronymous stabber), but it's, as Simon said really well in his review, an appropriate end, and one many bands would have dreamed of. This racist, killing and misanthropic dude managed to make music so damn fascinating people who absolutely do not agree with him can care about this. Legend.

I didn't have lots of high hopes for this going into it as it seemed clear that Varg was pretty persistent in focusing on his bland, boring, repetitive, folk-y sounding brand of dungeon synth, and this 1 and a half hour swansong project is pretty much that. Some of the tracks do actually have a bit of an interesting texture and as a whole this record is sorta fine as grey-ish rainy background music, but a lot of this is very underwhelming and the muffled spoken word tracks are as laughable as they've ever been in the past. The progression and soundplay of a lot of these tracks too is very predictable, especially if you've been familiar with any of the other ambient records he's put out in the 2010's such as Sol Austan, Mani Vestan or The Ways Of Yore. To think this is the same guy that put out Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem is actually kind of baffling to me sometimes.

Some songs are too short...ambient on some are very cool tho...other seemed too long...can't pass the idea this is an album of demos. Cool folk soundtrack, that's all folks.

the worst of vargs ambients with silly voiceovers and yet doesnt seem like an hour and a half passage, save the piano driven closer all tracks blend together like an asmr video

Cosplaying characters of different races, especially black characters if you're white, is an extremely strange taboo to me. Mind you, I'm not a cosplayer myself, but I've seen the ways people lash out at others just trying to express their love for their favorite characters. To me, it's a self-perpetuated issue that isn't even an issue in the first place. Black face has a history of ridicule and discrimination, and people label anything even remotely similar to that on a surface level as racism, despite the intent and execution being much different. This is the only thing I see people get hung up on. Changing your hair color? Fine. Using colored contact lenses? Sure. Yet since skin color has a really long history, people get pissed about it.
