Comeback in glory and brightness. I understand nothing in Norwegian language but its fucking powerful and melodic at a blow. Cannot stop moving my head back and forth.

kvelertak still rock but its not as good as their first 3 albums

When this band became a fresh new face in the Norwegian metal scene with their first two albums, they were writing really catchy blends of black metal, hardcore punk and 70's hardrock like a well-oiled machine. Despite the fact that they incorporated black metal into their sound that was really melodic and hook-driven, they didn't become the subject of ridicule like their peers in Deafheaven and Liturgy who had purists foaming at the mouth. Maybe their norwegian roots had something to do with it, but these guys were far from looking like a grim and tortured metal band and could've fit snugly working as baristas in some downtown hipster vegan donut shop. The hardrock aspect didn't overshadow their ferocity but made the pummeling qualities of their sound juxtapose very nicely with something that felt light, fun and not too edgy. Unfortunately, Kvelertak started to lean more towards this hardrock sound on 2016's Nattesferd, which was apparent in the vocals as well as the music, which to me pretty much ruined the balance they had managed to create with their earlier stuff, as this resulted in something that was starting to feel a bit too cheesy and forgettable for me. This record, despite having its catchy moments and more ambitious spots with longer songs and parts that go in very black metal centric passages, is pretty much a continuation of that. The really overcompressed, claustrofobic and static-y production which makes it seem like I'm having to listen to the band through a layer of white noise, isn't helping either.

First half was better IMO due to the shorter track times of straight up upbeat hardcore, but the second half's longer songs are certainly more eclectic in nature, as you may expect from Kvelertak.

This album is pretty solid and step fw from the previous, badly produced one (fixed by Kurt Balou here). They consolidate their more approachable sound. Necrosoft is standout, such as the Ghostlike, very hard rock riffing, track Fanden ta dette hull! (check that awesome punk HXC riff and solo varying with hard rock riffs). My highlight of this album though are the more serious mood 3 final tracks, specially Delirium tremens and Ved bredden av Nihil, that shows another side of the band yet to explore.

A return to the form of the first two albums. Highly enjoyable and with even more variety to satisfy everyone's tastes. It will be one of my album of the year contenders.

I'm disappointed. Most of the tracks turned out pretty lame... "Br�tebrann", "Fanden ta dette hull!" & "Delirium tremens" were outstandingly awesome. But the rest? Uninspired (and not black enough!!!!) - pretty much the same case like it was with 'Nattesfred'. And this really saddened me because I'm sure they still have the potential to write something like the self-titled or 'Meir'. Also, I'm satisfied with the new singer, he's a fuckin' awesome screamer (but please, do not try to sing...).

That first track had me hyped with that slow rise. Then, I was hit by a hard rock-influenced feeble copy of Meir. Some solis are cool, as well as some riffs here and there, for example Rogaland, Necrosoft, Discord, and kinda the run from track 8 to 10. That "kinda" is what ruins the album for me: almost every track is filled with at least one cool and one bad moment, and the songs not hindered by less-than-average parts do not have a significant impact. But, more importantly, what made me love Kvelertak in the first place is how effortlessly they could mix black metal evilness, hardcore punk fury and hard rock swagger. Even though each of these three subgenres still is present in this album, this is less evil, less furious, and less anthemic than Kvelertak or Meir. I can't really explain why I like what I like. All I can say is that I think they can't explain either why and how they lost what made them so exciting in the first place. I'm supposed to headbang, yet I barely tap my foot. I would love to argue it's all because the former lead singer left, but this album is plagued by the same problems Nattesferd had: compared to the band's first two albums, it's mostly uninspired, uninventive, and uneventful (and yeah the new singer does not have the same intensity Erlend had). On its own, it's not a bad record. But almost each track here is a lesser version of another track in their catalog. As the new Tame Impala record, very little sticks.
